Which lense to take?

Just a little delima. I have the Nikon 70-300G and the Sigma 70-300 APO I Super Macro. Which one should I take, can't really see the point of taking both.

I would be happy with either one, as a matter of fact if you decide to sell one let me know.

The Sigma will give you the macro option, where the other one won't. Otherwise, no differences in focal lengths etc. I would take the sigma.

But you love the Sigma Lenses

Well I'm taking the following:

50mm 1.4D
18-70mm 3.5/4.5

And I have a set of closeup filters so I can use these lenses for macro.

Actually kipper, I don't own a sigma. I went for the Tamron.

I just think that deciding between the two 70-300 lenses for taking on a trip, the sigma gives the extra option of the macro.

So aren't you going to take either of them?

I'm getting quite anxious because of the weight restrictions. My camera bag is currently 4kg, I have a satchel which is about 1.5-2kg plus I'm carrying a rice cooker.

Get rid of the rich cooker, and some clothes and take all the lenses, old and maybe new!.

They don't weigh that much And I'd take which ever lens you feel gives you the best results, if they are similar go for the Sigma. But take at least one, you'll kick yourself later if you don't have it and find that special shot that you just can't get with the shorter focal lengths ...

forget those lenses, the 24-120VR will bring you more happiness and successfully with your entirely trip.
We have couple members got them and enjoyed their trip as Vic and Gary.
And only take one 70-300 with you.
As mentioned earlier, the Computrekker will hurt your back if you try to do the hard packing it, cos you always see it with more room and can't limited yourself. The minitrekker has its own limited.
The weight of the bag won't give or harder at the earlier of the day but it will torture you once you worn out.

Think I'm leaning towards the Nikkor glass, mainly because I've seen some awesome shots taken with it. Aperture wise they're identical, not sure about the elements. If I need to do macro, I can always use the lenses I've got with closeup diopters or even splash out on a reversal ring.

As for the VR lense Birdy, as much as I'd love to have the 24-120VR and the 70-200VR to go with me on this trip, I don't think it'll be happening.
Definately can see myself having the 70-200VR though not far into the New Year

I have the Sigma & am happy with the images that come out of it.
The macro is quite sharp about half way between 200 & 300 mm.
Focusing is a little slow compared to the kit lens but not enough to worry me to much.

I think you will be happy with what ever lens you settle on but I think the Sigma with the macro opens up a little more to experiment with.

Yeah, I've seen quite a few photos with this lense and it looks quite crisp. Haven't really had much of a play with the APO I on the D70, however I've seen some good photos with the D70 with it

The lens is a little soft at full zoom but not alot to get Concerned about.
