Specifically, why is the AI-S f4 so much dearer then the AI-S f4.5
At least that's what I've noticed on Ebay. Some MF f4 have gone for over $500 while a MF f4.5 has no takers at $250

One 300mm F/4.5 AiS on eBay went for $510.88 - I bid up to $450 then dropped out

Chris,
Are you saying that there's not much difference in them?
I was getting the impression that they were like comparing the 70-300g and the 70-300d

I guess you were right Birdie, this lens didn't get a single bid.

There were at least three versions of the 300/4.5. The earliest (non-AI, AIAIS) was not very good. Two later ones, and ED AI and an ED IF AIS version get good reports. Still, I would urge you to stick with the 300/4 or AF-S 300/4.

My 300mm f/4.5 IF ED gives very good results.
