Brisbane tips, anyone?

I'll be going on a business trip to Brisbane for a week soon, and was wondering whether I should bring my camera... (hehe, just kidding )

Can anybody suggest photo opportunities/galleries/shops that any Brisbane traveller should try to squeeze into his schedule? I'm not sure how much time I'm going to have, it'll be mostly mornings or evenings. It will be easier if I know what to go for in advance.

perhaps a walk around the southbank area [across the river from the city centre] as there is quite a lot of interesting things there.
dusk shots from kangaroo point [high cliffs to the south of the city centre].
gardens to the south of the city centre.
a walk along the board walks beside the river.
Roma street parklands. [ the waterfall was turned off last time i was there... water saving i think]

Add Storey Bridge and City Hall for night shots. Wide angle city views from river height on a Citycat ferry can be quite stunning too.

Whereabouts are you going to be staying/based??

Jeepers Steffen - big ask If you are staying in the city then the Botannic Gardens, and South bank present many photo opportunities and you can throw Roma Street into the equation. If you are in the suburbs then it depends on where you are.

Don't forget your tripod... night shots of the Queen Street Mall, Casino, Museum, Down The River From The Bridges, The Gabba, Up on Mt Cootha overlooking Brisbane, Around West End. Even night shots of the Airport terminal both domestic and international are interesting.

I'm sure you'll have plenty of opportunities whilst here.

Where are you staying and what is your transport?

If you are flying in, try the Air Train from brisbane airport to the city.


The valley is grotty and gritty if you are game but it can be a bit risky.


You will have plenty to shoot it is always interesting to see a city with new fresh eyes.

Thanks for all the tips, I'll be staying at the Rydges in Southbank. That's where I'm spending most of the day, too (the conference I'm attending is held there). Hence, all trips will have to start and end there.

I'll be flying. What is the air train? Is it preferrable to taxi? How long is the trip from airport to Southbank, anyway?

I regularly commute from the airport via the air train, and it is very preferable to taxi. Especially, if you are going to the city.

$11 into the city, normally shorter time then cab as well.

Bring a tripod the city views from your hotel should be great!

check out the maritime museum right at the door and make sure you go to the Qld Art gallery a short walk through southpark/bank.

Head into West End just up the road for speciality food eateries. Not as expensive as the city either.


Have your camera ready for the train trip from the airport.

Roma street gardens are great too if you like that kind of thing.

How come nobody mentioned riverside?

Kangaroo point is good too. I'm suggesting the places that aren't as "generic" because most of those generic places doesn't inspire me now...

Meh ... the valley ain't that bad! I often go there for photos - not at night though, I must say. It is a different place, that's for sure!

If you're staying at Rydges you can capture some magnificent views (night) from the hotel of the city.

I recently attended a wedding there on the top floor and the views were stunning. The pictures turned out really well.

If you ask the staff I'm confident they'd allow you to go to the functions room and take some night shots. Take your tripod and remote.
