I doubt this is what you're after, but Bunnings sells 1000W halogen lamps (2x500W) on a stand for $30. Not studio quality, but they do a reasonably good job for the dollars. I'll hire mine to you for $3. :)

I found that halogen work lamps have some issues:
- Like other hot lights they generate a lot of heat and not much light (compared to flash).
- The colour of the light is far from ideal for digital photography, you can manually white balance but it's still unven and a bit ugly. For B&W this isn't an issue.
- The lamp bulb and head leave weird shadows and uneven illumination. You will want to heavily diffuse this light source to make it less offensive. Given the heat generated you need to be careful when placing the lamp near anything - this means attaches diffusers requires more effort.

In the end I found using simple window light and/or a flash provided much more satisfying results.

Matt,

Light stands can be had for around $60 + each, last time I checked.

I'm not sure how much background paper costs, but I'm wondering how much you would really save by hiring?

In the short term it would be better to hire a studio that is fitted out and do an intensive shoot to get your monies worth 8)
