Got my R1800 a week or so ago.

Just hooked it up for a play then.

I grabbed Qimage and the profile for Ilford Smooth Pearl from scannerplace / ausmedia.

However, I can't seem to get the profile working right. If I chose 'let photoshop determine colours' then the Epson print preview colours are all washed out, and the prints are too.

If I leave it as 'printer determine colours' it prints well enough.

Any suggestions how to get the profile working properly?

Both the print quality and the Ilford paper are excellent.

Are you using XP? Sometimes XP can overide the settings you want.

If so then check your profile under XP.

To do this;

Open start / settings / printers and faxes
Right click on the R1800 and select properties
Remove any profiles that you don't use and select MANUAL

Try that and see if it is better.

i have found it best "not" to select print preview .... have a go and see if it makes a difference

Done that Steve, didn't seem to fix it.

It's sorta like it's auto boosting the exposure? BTW, it's not only in photoshop, but also in Qimage.

Do you mean that Print Preview alters the colours?

When I had photoshop selecting colours, both the Print Preview and Print were out of wack.

When I let the printer select colours, both print preview and print were close to on screen.

I've also just discovered that when I formatted a while ago, I forgot to apply my monitor profile, so will have to hunt that down.

Had a glance at that BP.

Looks like Epson have a reasonable guide to sorting it (though I think I was doing things the right way).

They say don't use Print Preview as colour proofing, just positioning. However, the print I did with the Ilford paper profile was the same crappy washed out look as Print Preview.

More fiddling tomorrow / when I next get time.

i have found that when i tell the ptinter (epson1290s) not to do any colour adjustment, and i have selected " let photoshop determine colours, i find i have correct colour.

Hi Nick
The Qimage Help section on ICC profiles is pretty good. You might find that you are either doubling up or cancelling out Photoshop with Qimage.

Unless you have a digital workflow from camera to printing, it is almost impossible to get your printing correct.......... along with your monitor being profiled using a Spyder or Eye One..........

Photoshop has to be set up correct......... info on the Epson web site....... also shooting in adobe RGB

Could you keep a log of the steps you go through to get it all up and running. I'm sure many member would love to keep that on hand as an aid to setting up their own printers. By the way...if you use the Epson papers and profiles do you still have a problem?

Hi Nick,
In the printer dialog you need to make sure you have selected ICM in the Colour Management section. (Also ICC/ICM Profile to OFF if that appears---depends on version you have)

Not sure exactly what the deal is at the moment. Followed Epson's guide, except using sRGB rather than aRGB.

Just done a test print setup. 3 images next to each other. Printed one strip with printer deciding colours, then a strip next to it with photoshop deciding colours. PS deciding colours looks a ton better. Don't think it's quite right still. Printer deciding is way too dark. PS deciding is a bit light still.

Need to profile the monitor.

Matt: Don't have any Epson paper. I believe I'm entitled to some free because of the extra set of cartridges I got, but unsure how to claim them.

The extra set of ink will not be your entitle, coz I "gave" you that set of ink, my bonuses from Epson and I gave them away to member and it won't count toward the bonus of Epson paper.

Work out this way:
- A set of ink at cheapest cost (my cost) around $105.00 GST Inc.

That means you only paid for the printer R1800 = $915.00 GST Inc.

A pack of Epson printer RRP$40.00, my cost about $25.00.
Which way do you want? a set of ink or a pack of Epson paper?
Can we swap?

Someone had mentioned free paper in the Printer sale thread. However, very pleased with the value I got - thank you for passing on the ink cartridges that Epson gave you.

That's Heath, he paid for an Epson R1800 @$1020.00 and paid extra for a set of ink cartridges ($110.00), then he claimed back a pack of Epson paper.

Very pleased with this unit, excellent printing quality.

I know my epson r310 is no r1800, however all the print boxes look the same.

I also found that letting the printer decide colours was way to dark.
