New D70 Dead? :(Ok so my D70 has just died
I bought it a few days ago from camerahouse, after someone here mentioned them selling some new(ish) d70's. Anyway, I just sent back the lense today cos it was broken, and now my D70 appears to have died. Basically I was taking some shots by holding one of my k-mount lenses infront of the camera, seeing as I had to send back the other one, and after shooting it the cam just died... The top display literally froze, just displaying whatever.. I turned the cam off, the display kept displaying stuff. so I took the battery out and put it back in and it wont turn back on. I tried resetting it and it does nothing. Anyone? BTW, No green light flashing. ..:: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicknav ::..

Are they New or Used stock?
Lot of refurbished D70/s or end of lease returned to stores and they're selling cheap with short warranty, are you in this lot? Birddog114

Hey birddog.
There was about 10x D70's that they had that were used for a month or so over christmas for the shots that they take of kids with santa in the shopping centers.. so it's not had all that much use... on a tripod for a month. It's got a 3 month warranty, it's not new though. ..:: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicknav ::..

You say that you a\had a K-mount lens in front of the camera. How close to the camera was this? Were they touching, perhaps?
I'm wondering if the K-Virus may have spread to the camera. g.

How do you know the 100% original sources? I can tell you something better than that! I bought back yesterday from my customer, who leased two D70 for 12 months. They upgraded to the D2x and one of them has 5549 and other is 3500 shots. Those cameras look brand new and I passed them to two of my friends. Birddog114

OK,
If they have it for just the Xmas period that means the cameras are just two or four months old and they offered 3 months warranty, what warranty is it? Maxwell or Third party? Birddog114

I'm not too sure TBH. I brought it from Fotoriesel Camerahouse in sydney, though.

That's not good. Did you perhaps make any exposures while the mounts were touching? K-Virus is something to be avoided. It's like AIDS for digicams. g.

How did you manage to use a Pentax lens with a D70?

Ok .... let's explore this a little ... Why would you be doing this? And why would you be thinking that that this might not perhaps foul up the linkages and/or perhaps short out the electronic contacts in the camera? We'll worry about K-Virus in a little while .... g.
Gary Stark Nikon, Canon, Bronica .... stuff The people who want English to be the official language of the United States are uncomfortable with their leaders being fluent in it - US Pres. Bartlet
I was doing this because as I said, I had to send back my 28-100 Lense beacause the mount was broken. I don't see how it could mess with the electronics or the linkages.. I wasn't forcing it in or anything, I was holding it infront of the camera. It's an old manual Pentax lense. ..:: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicknav ::..

Yep. Let's see .... unmounted ... light leakage ... no focal point .... And you thought that it would work because ?
I didn't say "mess". Consider that with no lens mounted, the camera's electronic contacts are all exposed. The mount of the K-Mount lens will be ... metal ... which, if I recall correctly, is a truly great conductor of electricity. Certainly, when I'm doing soldering and stuff like that, I do prefer to use metal objects. And when I look at a car, electric wires, circuit boards ... pretty well anything to do with electrics, I see .... Metal! And if I choose to short something out, say, to test a battery of something ... I use something made of .... Metal! Now, getting back to your problem .... you have electronic contacts in your camera exposed to ... an incorrect, but touching, metal k-mount lens. Can you say "zap!" ? Because of the low voltages and currents involved, I'd probably be saying it pretty quietly, but I'd probably still be saying it. Getting back to the K-Virus ... look inside the camera's mouth ... at the electronic contacts. They should be silver in colour, unless your camera has been infectred, in which case, somew of them may have turned golden in colour. g.

Mate, I'm not an idiot Don't need to speak to me like one. I was doing it on purpose. This is the last pic before my cam died, http://vortsekz.info/lastpic.jpg and I knew exactly what it would be like.
Again, thanks for the help, but I don't need to be spoken to like an idiot. I realise all this, except i never thought that th elense would harm it. I'm no electronics expert, though. That said, the contacts which are at the top, just under the flash, are all silver and there is no golden discoloration. ..:: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicknav ::..
..:: http://vortsekz.info ::.. ..:: http://vorty.deviantart.com ::.. D70, 50/1.8, 18-70/3.5-4.5, TLZ2, 1GB Ultra II CF
I'm not speaking to you as if you're an idiot. I'm simply trying to fully understand the full extent of the problem here, and in so doing, I'm trying to alert you to the stupidity of what you've been doing. If you feel a need a need to get defensive about that, then please go elsewhere, but if you want serious answers to what appears to be a serious issue, then you need to fully understand the possibilities inherent in what you have done here. And the possibility - a very real one - is that you may have damaged the electronics in your camera by inadvertantly touching - and thereby shorting out - the electronic contacts in the camera with the metal parts of a lens that was not designed to go anywhere near the innards of a D70. You might not like hearing that news, but whether you like hearing it or not is irrelevant. It's simple physics, and what I'm describing is nothing more than a logical outcome from the actions that you've described. Again, altogether now ... zap! g.

I wasn't getting deffensive, mate.
I am fully aware of the fact that I may have very well fucked, for lack of a better word, my camera because of it, however the way you were trying to tell me that was as if I was some kind of idiot who has no idea. I am generally an extremely cautious person when it comes to expensive shit, ie my camera. I had never heard of a lense fucking a camera in this way, hence I never thought it to be a problem. It's not like it was something I was told when learning photography. Thankyou for the help, but honestly, the way you were wording it sounded as if you had thought I was some dumbass Anyway. if anyone knows of any solution, let me know. ..:: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicknav ::..

Vort - basically, if you have shorted out the electronics in the D70, it will have to be repaired. This in itself will not be covered by warranty as it will be deemed user misuse, unless you can talk around it
Chris

Bets?
Which is exactly how and why I suggest that you're being defensive about this. At least you're accepting the possibility that this might be a case of user error, but the inital indications given by you were that the camera had just failed. Perhaps it has. Or perhaps it has fried. I really don't know one way or the other. And the sad fact is that nobody here can answer that question for you either, as much as we'd like to. But you do need to prepare yourself for the possibility that, if you have fried the camera, that is what the repairer will be telling you, and no warranty will cover that sort of damage.
I have heard of this sort of thing happening. But then again, I'm an old fart, and there's not much that I've not seen. And it has nothing to do with what they (who are "they" by the way?) might have told you when you were learning photography. It's perhaps more to do with square pegs and round holes actually, which kind of comes back to my pointed questioning of you. And beyond the the physical issues, there are certain optical issues which may get in the way of helping this to occur too.
You're perfectly welcome to your opinion. g.

Glen,
Yes, I have a copy if it's required, but in this case the camera is dead, so if it's infected, it's already too late. g.

That's because you only have the freeware "innoculate via firmware" version that was released to the public.. I've been told that professional repairers have a version that might help in this instance. If I'm alone in a forest and my wife is not around to hear what I say, am I still wrong ??
Do you guys always gang up on someone who's having trouble to make him look like an idiot?

Well, it (obviously) doesn't turn your camera into an email daemon, but it can cause quite serious issues in your camera, including some issues mistaken for BGLOD, and often causes problems with lenses not working properly and/or issues with CF cards. Buffer overruns turn up all over the place, to the great embarrasment of programmers who should know better.
Believe, or disbelieve, what you will. My camera is working fine. Can you say that about your's ? g.

Vort, this is the best advice for you. I would go as quick as I could to where you bought it and hope they don't realise it was camera misuse which shorted out the contacts. Your warranty is short and I would get it repaired as soon as possible. The D70 was replaced by the D70s in April 2005 (though a few D70 were sold after that date) so Maxwell is unlikely to honour the warranty for too long. You are quick to dismiss the virus but it was only two or three years ago that people thought mobile phones couldn't get them. There are a number of viruses aimed at photographers, some which delete images, others which replace them with porn (might be an advantage on some of my shots). There are plenty of errors which behave like a virus.
Oh you guys, stop the picking on him.
