On another post there is discussion of remote vs cable but if we are talking of remotes and cable releases (I have the Jaycar cheapie as the Nikon was not available when I was after one, and it was cheaper ) then who has used Nikon Capture remote control and for what purpose.

I would be interested time lapse photography, Santa Claus christmas shots, studio photography, astronomy ...what else is there? and how good is it, has someone explored the boundaries here?

Nikon Capture Remote Control is control the camera via software, you need to link your camera to the PC and use the PC to control your camera for specific of shooting, A, M,P, EV, bracketing etc....

On the other hand the wired or wireless remote control, controls the camera as zoom in & out and shutter release, other function has to be preset prior to use.

I use Nikon Capture remote control when taking astronomy images with my telescope.

I imagine that the main use would be in studio work. I cannot imagine lugging a computer around for most other work.

Yes, Studio works.
And outdoor works as well with wire/ wireless.

At last year's Anniversary Meet, Gary gave us a good example of using Capture (more specifically, the uploading of pictures as they're shot) to assist in studio-based photography. It makes it a lot easier to work out composition/lighting than trying to look at the back of the camera!

If you have access to the Nikon DVD on using the speedlight creatively (I forget what it's called - "The Speed of Light" I think) then you'll see the use of Capture in the field for essentially the same purpose.

I use Nikon Capture Control for everything that's done in the studio. Works quite nicely with Bridge too - i just have both running and the pics pop up in Bridge a few seconds after shooting. I have found that the auto-rotate function (set on the camera) opens another little app on the Mac that creates havoc so i usually have to switch it off...

It'd be nice if Phase One's C1 software supported Nikon cameras cos it's pretty good for tethered studio work (and what we use with the Canon's and P25 digi back) although not so nice for working the RAW files.

I certainly don't intend to lug around a desktop but connected to a laptop in the field etc; i would think there are useable possibilities. I wonder out loud whether any of the new PDA's would be capable of running a connection eg; the XDAII. That would be kinda cool in a tech way and useful for recording purposes in the field as I know laptops are used in many situations for field work eg; updating records.

In any case thanks Beetleboy for comments. The studio work with this was the main point of the query. It doesn't look as though many in the forum have done much with it though. Do you know if its functionality has been upgraded in later Capture versions? I have 4.1 still and haven't bothered to upgrade as I use CS2 mostly. The D70 has such a wide range of features it is difficult to use all of its features. Don't know about phase 1 software will look it up.

To use Nikon Capture Control the software needed to be installed on the PC or notebook. PDA didn't have space & its OS won't support Nikon Capture Control

I'm using Capture Control 4.3.something and from what i can see it hasn't really changed at all!

I have heard that there are PSD's that work tethered but that's about all i've heard!
