Some of you may recall this thread on claiming GST

It would seem that the right hand does not know what the left hand is going in relation to declaring goods coming back into Australia. When I fronted up to Customs upon returning to Sydney from NZ, the young woman behind the counter said that to her knowledge, once you had gone over the $900 limit, you could not claim any of it! I said that this was incorrect and handed her the email I had received from Customs which stated otherwise. I am so glad that I took the email with me as she conceded that she was apparently wrong! She took a copy of the email and then charged me $200 duty (which is a tad more than I had worked out but I did not want to argue the point). I am still ahead but am unsure if I will go through this procedure again!
So the moral of the story is take all evidence with you as you may need it to back up your case - or alternatively, don't declare it
Cheers
