Lens not fitting???

Hey,
I just picked up a 50mm f/1.8 lens for my Nikon... and it doesn't fit my D70.
It seems way too tight, it seems to fit with the left side of the camera ( non-handgrip side ), but loots almost like it is tilted because it doesn't sink as far into the camera on the right side.
Does any of this make sense?
Can anyone help?
<-- starting to panic.

Dean, does the lens look OK? Not warped or anything peculiar like that?

Looks fine.. doesn't look warped...
Looks exactly like every other 50mm lens i've ever seen...
Have I done something stupid like gotten a nikon lens for a different mount?

Where did you get this lens? EBay? Retail? Grey dealer?

Dean,
How old is the lens?
Does it have a small aluminium shoe with a slot in it, adjacent to the numbers on the aperture ring? If so, is their a small hole on each side of this slot, or is it solid?
I'm thinking that it may be a very early, pre-AI mount lens, which would be difficult to mount, and would present in this manner.

Step 1: Take new Nikon 50mm 1.8D lens
Step 2: Line up the dots on D70 Body
Step 3: Try to rotate lens.
Step 4: Encounter Resistance approximately 1/8 of the way around. Stop.
Step 5: Tentatively test resistance
Step 6: Stop. Try to take an image to see if that works.
Step 7: Remove lens, examine, scratch head.
Step 8: Try again.
Step 9: Post to Forums.
Step 10: Try to take shot of new lens with Kit lens.
Step 11: LED of Death.
Now with no lens on at all I can switch the camera on fine and access the menu, navigate like normal. With a lens in, any lens, the menus flash up then die, LED flashes.
So... who's the recommened nikon repairer in Melbourne?

2-button reset got it to a point where it'll switch on! Thank you!
I think the metering information may be broken though.
Uhh.. scratch that... Camera just locked up entirely. Off/On switch wont even work now, but the menu system is fine.. First symptom was a lack of auto-focus...
