While I must admit I haven't (yet) made any money out of my photographs - and in fact would have no idea where to start with trying to sell my prints - I have a feeling that getting 20 cents per use of one of my images would be a rediculously low reimbursement for my time and (admitadly limited) talent.

Looking forward to any other's ideas/advice on this subject!

Hi All, well i looked into this site somewhere before and yes i too was shocked when i read the 20 cents for a pic. My thoughts was WOW that damn cheap for a pic and gave no more thought to it.
Ok i am no pro, far from it i am just a beginner who happens to get some good action pics from time to time and a lot cheaper than the Pro who attends some of the major race meetings we have here in the South East of SA at Mac Park, motorcycle racing that is. I dont print out a lot, only on request but do sell a lot of my pics to bike riders.

They ask me or email me to see if i have pics of them and sometimes if it is more than a 1 day race i will print out a proof sheat, and then i will sell them all the pics i have of them on a cd as they can there for print what they want, save me any hassles. I am always at the track anyhow, so why not take pics and make some money to help buy memory cards, cds etc.
Cd's i get cheap, like 30 cents each from Perth(cheaper now) sort the good pics out and burn sometime i will do up cds covering the weends racing and sell them as well. The pro sells a file on a cd for $40, i sell all the pics i got of that rider for $20,unless they want something done like a lot of PP and ready for print with borders i might charge a bit more. I just happen to have a bit of a market as no other people with camera's do what i do i cover even ride days, where average riders of the street can come and try out on the race track. One weekend i made nearly $400 for my pics, so i was happy and 1 team buys every pic i take of them, digital or film, they seen some of my pics once and said what did i want for them, i said i dont know never sold any before, i said how much will you give me for them and these where 6x4 prints and he said i will give $5 each, i said sold. All started from there.

Anyhow there is all form and ways to maybe sell your pictures if there is a market for them, and i know a bloke who sent a proof pic of a big storm in sydney to the daily telegraph and they brought the picture, who knows hope for us all yet.

If we can get a few bucks along the way enjoying our hobby, why not it helps when you have that lust feeling. I hope.LOL
Cheers

BBJ, it sounds like that will go some way to paying for the 70-200VR that you are after. It is a good little market that you have cornered there.

Cheers

Sheepie,

I feel the same way about the 20c usage fee, especially after someone handed me $50 for a single 10x8 a couple of weeks ago. Admittedly, parents will pay a lot for pics of their children doing their thing. In this case it was a teenage son doing a standup comedy show as a support act down at the local pub. At 20c, I would have to sell that image 250 times. No thanks, images that I sell are sold almost exclusively. That places a value on them because they are unique.
My concern is that my rights as the creator and copyright owner would be diminished with such widespread distribution of the image. Well, maybe not, but enforcing those rights would certainly be difficult.
Piracy is rife these days and who is to say that when a person buys that image online that it will only be used once. In fact there is someone in this town who is selling prints of someone elses work downloaded from the net. He is a thief, and not a very good one because the prints are not even on photopaper.

Cheers

Matt
