As the subject suggests, I've joined the Sigma bandwagon...partially

Just bought another D70 bundled with the Nikon kit lens + a Sigma 70-300 APO Macro (red ring). It's all less than a year old and at a great bargain too - especially once I sell the kit lens Hopefully it'll be in my hot little hands tomorrow evening.

How decent is the Sigma? (Gary's not allowed to answer this one... I know it'll function better as a doorstop or a new toy for the cat next door ). I guess I'll test it out over the weekend to see if I like it or not. I've had a look at some pics on pbase and the bokeh isn't that great

I have the Sigma 70-300mm. It's a good lens, but you get what you pay for. I'm out growing it I think. I'd like to get something with sharper glass, and faster.

Sounds like a good bundle you picked up there.

I have the Sigma 70-300 and for the price it isn't bad, but I'm often frustrated by the lack of sharpness at 300mm. The Nikkor 70-210 is a far superior zoom, but it appears to be rare as hens teeth these days.

So Wayne does that mean you can have B&W in one camera and colour in the other?

This lens obviously has it's disadvantages, but for a "budget" lens, I think it's relatively good.

It will certainly be a far cry from the Sigma or Nikon 70-200 Lenses, but so is the pricetag.

Using this lens within it's limitations, it is possible to take some fairly remarkable photos...but the conditions have to be optimal to do so. Basically, the cheaper the lens, the more compromises you will need to make.

In the end, it is what it is....a budget lens that is made for an amateur/enthusiast. It's not a pro lens and shouldn't be compared to one (IMHO).

The difference between this lens, the Nikon G Lens & ED Lens is negligable. I chose the Sigma because I thought the macro ability would be fun to use (which it is). Otherwise, either of these are likely to give you very similar results (from what I have seen & read).

Thanks for the advice and comments guys. i'm certainly not expecting miracles from the lens, but then again I love a challenge Will see how I go with it. I'll probably give it up in a few months tho, just keeping it as I don't have a tele in my bag,

Greg - Maybe At least this way, I can have my two primes hooked up without having to faff around with swapping lenses.

I just picked up the new toys

It's weird seeing a D70 using the old firmware. The condition is immaculate - feels more solid than my D70 - probably because the grip still exists!
