Hi guys,

I thought i'd show you some stats from three weddings that i'm currently getting printed. These starts are the ones we give to the clients, ie, no crap shots.

Three weddings, standard dark church, post photos outside and evening receptions. Our style is to stay as far away from flash as possible, to try and capture the ambient light.

I found the stats quiet interesting, can I ask what you used to compile them with ?

I found the aperture graph the most interesting, I would of expected around the f8 mark then was taken, but perhaps that is just my own shooting style / lenses I use.

It may be useful to list the lenses that you shot with, to put some of the stats in context a little more ?

These are indeed very interesting, I think we all would learn a lot about our photography style if we compiled charts like this and reviewd them, would probably shock us too, but I think I probably get to the idea and never follow through on making the chart haha id just be playing with the pictures ,

Personally, these stats are not surprising given that these are wedding shoots.

One would expect that without using flash (too much), you would need to open your aperture ( to maximise the available light) and you would always try to use the lowest ISO available (to reduce noise). Also, being that you can get in relatively close to the action, the focal length is right around the "commonly-ideal" portraiture focal lengths of 50 - 150mm.

It would be quite interesting to see our own graphs and what settings are typical to ourselves.

Padey, if you don't mind me asking, how did you work this graph out ? I assume you used a program that looks at the exif data and builds the graph for you ?

I've used this:http://www.snapfiles.com/get/ExposurePlot.html or something similar to generate this graph (which I cut off on the long size, and those are "corrected" 35mm lengths, so 18mm is the short end of my 12-24 zoom):

Your second question affects the first point. As a guide, for any dark church shots I use 28mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.4. My partner uses 85mm f1.2 and 135mm f2. DOF for the main isn't an issue, as most of the time the focus is on the bride and groom. The exception is in some of the fine art shots that we do.

Exif Viewer 2. It's a nice program that allows you to look at the meta-data of a particular shoot. Sometimes reasons for focal length/aperture/ISO are environmental and sometimes style.

In any case, it's good to see where we have room to grow in our style.

Gav is going well. No sure how long ago you spoke to him, but he sold all his nikon/kodak kit and moved Canon; two 5Ds. He loves it and if leasing works out, I might follow him.

Apart from that he is busy as ever (2 weddings on this saturday) plus doing model shoots and the like.

Hello Andrew, yes i know he was getting rid of all his Nikon/Kodak gear as i brought his 300m from him. Good he is enjoying the Canon gear and keeping busy.

I just downloaded a copy of the Exposure Plot program... Very interesting!!

Although it tells me I have two shots at 1920mm..... Even my 500*1.4*1.5 (crop factor) only equals 1050. Hmmm I wish I had a lens that long!!
