If you want flexibility in your shooting, the second last thing you want is to be using the various picture taking
modes on the camera.
Probably the first thing you need is some legs. and then to start to acquire some knowledge about some basic photographic techniques. Fortunately for you, we're about to start posting a few short papers on exactly these sorts of topics in the beginners section.
Getting back to your question: legs to support the camera. Switch to M
mode. WB incandescant -1. NO flash. Use the self timer.
Are you shooting raw or jpg?
F5.6. and/or F8 focus, and play with shutter speeds from 1sec - 30 secs to start with.
Look at your results, and try to work out what's hapenning, what's working for you, and what's not.
