How do they verify the photographer is student or not?

Thanks for the heads up, Nito. :D Will check it out. After a quick look at the terms it seems reasonable.

Don't know that they'll stop you from entering, but it says they will check if you win.

Thanks for the heads-up. It's a shame they're giving away Canon cameras, but still, I need a new doorstop .

At a guess, I'd say that they're going to use the images as the stock photos for the new version of Windows (Vista) due late this year or early next year. They'd have to pay above $20k to buy the rights to images through normal channels, the competition is a clever idea.

A great way for Microsoft to get thousands of great images for nothing. Offer a measly (relativly) prize and get thousand and thousands of free images to use however and whenever they like.

Hmmm.

Damnit.

I've got a degree in Photography... I can't enter!

Then again, I doubt the following would've been a successful entry:

Unlike most of those crappy Getaway comps, this one is properly run.
Submitting an entry does not assign or transfer any ownership or copyrights to Microsoft; those rights remain with the creator of the original work. However as a condition of accepting a prize, you agree to grant Microsoft an irrevocable royalty-free worldwide license to reproduce and display the image, credited with your first and last name, in print and on the web for the purposes of promoting this contest. If you are unable, or unwilling, to grant Microsoft this right, please do not enter this contest.

For $20k they can do what they want with my image. There's no penalty for entering

Some interesting shots, I really like the Jellyfish one, its awesome!

Bad luck on not winning, 7,700 entrys are a lot of keen student photographers.

That winning image is exactly the sort of image you'd expect on a Microsoft advertising campaign.
