Teleconverter with 70-200VRHi All,
I'm looking for a teleconverter for my 70-200VR. I have searched the site and it seems that the best option is the Nikkor 1.7, although this would be great, it is very $$$ and I am looking for an alternative. Does anyone have experience with using a teleconverter on this lens? It has been suggested to me that the Tamron/Kenko Pro 300 2X does a good job. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. The 1.7 TC does cost a bit... but it's a fraction of the 70-200.
I'd be thinking if I went the distance to get the 70-200VR, why compromise your optics with a cheaper TC? For a few hundred $$$ extra, I'd look at the Nikon. I'm sure you would probably notice minimal degradation on cheaper lenses with a cheaper TC. If you're looking at the TC for only very occasional work where you don't need outright optical performance, you could probably get away with the third party TCs.
Couldn't agree more Daniel I have one also and highly recommend it. D4|D3S|D700+MB-D10| 14-24 |24-70|70-200 f/2.8 VRII|70-200 f/4 VR|80-400 AF-S|500VR|Sigma 150 f/2.8 macro|TC's 1.4,1.7E & 2.0III|SB 900

When people ask what equipment I use - I tell them my eyes.
I too am saving pennies to invest in a TC17EII to get extra reach for sports photos,
check this link (thanks Fozzie) showing some great F1 action from the UK with the 70 - 200VR and the TC17. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=18230606

W.O.W....gee I need to get budget clearance....those pics are awesome.
rookie2,
I just checked out the link and went through it wondering if they were shot on a tri or monopod. He claims most were handheld WOW, looks like the nikkor 1.7 is the way to go It also looks like I'm spending the extra $$ after all. Banned due to dishonesty and disrespect
Ghost,
I did all the research, ended up getting the Nikon and haven't been disappointed. If you can't afford it right now, wait a little longer, save more and then get it. Getting a cheap converter with that lens is like putting fluffy dice on a Ferrari Tony All I know, is that I don't know enough.....
tc17 is an awesome addition to the lens, this was taken at 240mm F8 1/640sec with camera sharpening set to normal, all i have done is reduce it to 72dpi and added the mark.
from what ive noticed you loose a little in focusing speed but it is still quick enough to keep up with aussie rules action. plus it adds a few extra grams to the package. you get what you get, always learn from the mistakes
