Cheap Printers and ADSL2+ Wireless Modem/Routers

Postby kipper on Fri May 26, 2006 1:43 am

At the moment I'm looking for a fairly cheap printer, mostly for word processing but if it can print photos all the better. I'm looking to spend at the maximum around $200au (roughly 80gbp). If anybody can make any suggestions it'd be great. I'd wade through all the threads but I only have 2hrs a day max pc usage and the majority of that time is spent on job/education related usage at the moment.

Also I'm looking at buying a Belkin, Netgear, US Robotics or whatever brand ADSL2+ wireless modem/router but wondered how good the USB2.0 WIFI dongles are. I'd prefer to get a PCI card but quite a few are offering packs with a free USB2.0 WIFI dongle so not sure whether to take up the offer.

kipper,
I have and use the USB 2.0 wifi, it's good, no problem, D-Link 108Mbps.
ADSL2+ router again, D-link or Netgear
Printer: some cheap "shit" Epson or Canon inkjet printer on the shelves will do the job for you but they do not provide high quality in colour output, especially when you want to print some of your takes.

Darryl,

As Thanh has suggested, either Epson or Canon will work. Check the number of ink cartridges it uses; more is better, and avoid those that have more than one colour from a single cart. You'll pay dearly for that priviledge when one colour is exhausted, and the other four are not.

The wifi dongles should work fine, but the real question becomes one of how many USB2 ports does your PC have? Using one for the dongle, another for the printer, another for your CF reader, another for your mouse ... that's four ... usb key? psd? scanner? pda?

Hubs work for some devices, but not for all, so they're not always a satisfactory alternative in that realm.

As to brand for the router, I've had good experiences with DLink ...

I have a second ADSL2+ netcomm modem/router for sale if you are interesed. NP5PlusW.

I was having some issues with my steam account and in a rash decision bought a new modem router to replace the netcomm modem. iinet checked the connection and they say its not their fault and it must be software or hardware. So I bought a new netgear modem/router and found I had the same problem. It is driving me insane.

What are the Epson R230 or the Epson R250 or the Canon IP4200 like?
