Postby LOZ on Wed May 31, 2006 2:59 pm

What are your suggestions as to Polariser filter to suit my new toy ?
I asked Zeeke this question and he said to just wear sunglasses or squint.

the super hmc pro 1 version has the added benefit of not giving you a brownish representation of the polarized effect in the viewfinder
check if this version has a filter thread as rthe cheaper ones dont and you have to use a crappy rubber lens cap that smudges the glass when used

the nikon version does the same thing but costs much much more

I have a B&W circular polariser (two actually: one slim and one normal). I had problem with a Pro1 Hoya and won't buy them again. The B&W have brass thread that does not bind like aluminium. On the slim one there is no thread in the front. Very well made...

Loz,
The circular polariser may be hard to use on the 10-20 giving an uneven sky.

Perhaps you bought a cheap version or factory second, they are all excellent filters.

Laurie,

I think a lenscap would probably work quite well. :)

Seriously, the viewing angle of the lens is greater than what a CPL can really address with any real effect, and thus you will see some parts of the image showing evidence of the CPL, while other parts will not, thus leading to a potentially unsatisfactory image.

If the lens has provision for an internal filter, as some Nikkors do, that might be a potential solution - but I don't think I've seen an instance of using a CPL internally - but otherwise, I think that you're stuck.

A "skylight" filter is another option.

Laurie - where did you end up buying your Sigma?

Did you get a decent price?

I have a slim B+W CPL for my Tokina 12-24, it's a good filter.. But Gary is right, you often get weird effects on ultra-wide lenses.

Barrie,

Do you mean how much did they give him to take the lens off their hands? :)

Yep.

Probably comes with a black plastic bag as well. For permanent, off-site storage. :) :)

I have tested a CPL on my 10-20 and it is IMHO a waste of money. The lens does such a good job on skys, clouds etc that you really don't see any benefit and as others have stated it can be difficult to get an even spread.
