Hi there,

I have an oppertunity to go to the Weribee Treatment Plant tomorrow in the hope of shooting some birds and wildlife...

However I only have a day to do any research on where to go and what to do once I get there...

I know some of you guys have been there and am wondering if you can offer me some help on where to go once I get there (I have a melways so finding the place shouldn't be too hard... but it looks pretty big!!)

Any help/tips/things to look out for would be greatly appreciated. I've never been there before so have no idea what to expect but would like to make the most of this day trip.

Hmm.

Just looking at the website it says I may need a permit... is that the case or is that just for accessing some of the more 'sensitive' areas?

Paul - Extract from the following website:

Access to Western Treatment Plant for Bird Watching or Fishing

Access to Melbourne Water's Western Treatment Plant for bird watching or fishing is available between 6.30am and 9pm, seven days a week and is by permit only.

The cost of a Bird Watching permit is $20 for a two-year permit. An access key is available to all Bird Watching permit holders for a refundable deposit of $50.

Yeah I found that in my travels fozzie.

Looks like the WTP will have to wait for a few weeks while I get the permit.

Apparently it's very hard to find your way around if you don't know where you're going too.

Can anyone tell me if it's worth the hassle?

from the photos I have seen I would say a definite yes.

note that the wtp is regarded as one of australias FINEST birding locations

Hi Paul,

Even though I live in Brisbane, I have heard and read numerous times that the WTP has some of the best examples of birds in the country. The $20 for a permit will be some of the best 20 bucks you will have spent.

As the famous line in Monty Python's "Life of Brian" goes, "you lucky, lucky barstard!". I'm green with envy

I'm glad I'm not the only Monty Python fan here. I have the sound of an arrow hitting a tree followed by "Message for you sir" out of a monty python movie (can't remember which one) as my SMS tone on my phone and nobody can understand why or where it's from.

I'll try and organise the permit and key so I can get up the in the next few weeks.
