POLL - How many batteries?

There has been some battery life discussion elsewhere, and I got to wondering.

In relation to your camera, or your main camera if more than one, how many batteries do you have?

Personally, I always get a second battery right at the start, and always carry a fully charged battery in the bag.

How many do you have?

I like to have spare batteries. I have two sets for my SB-800. I have two for my Nikon D70s (though one is a 3rd party alternative that barely gets used as I very rarely run down the original battery).

More as a "just in case" than for any real need caused by a history of running out of battery power :)

I've got three, so one in the camera and two fully charged spares. I had a big trip that I went on and wanted the third, just in case. For my shooting style, having just one spare would be fine.

I cycle through them so they all get used regularly.

Exactly what I do. Pickup a spare battery at the same time as the camera. Nothing worse than missing a shot because of a dead battery.

While on the subject of batteries what are the best type of batteries for an SB800? rechargable? single use?
if rechargable what type and where is the best place to get some?

i only have 1 battery for my D70s and currently have none for my SB800, though i can use my GFs rechargables if i am desperate.

I only have one at the moment...

... But when the D2Xs battery becomes available I will probably buy one or two of those

(I could be waiting a while :))

I had two for the D70, which needed it for the NR that I was always using on it. I now work with only one, and don't mind it at all as it sets a limit for how late I can stay up at night taking pictures. With a spare I might stay out until after 2am sometimes.

When a generic comes out for the D200, I'll probably get it. Perhaps there already is one.

Rechargable NiMH AAs. Single-use AAs only for emergencies.

Your best bet is Casa de Birdy ;)

You have to love the istDS, which takes AA batteries (four of them). For this reason alone, I carry a charger and no less than four complete sets of rechargable batteries. Four sets means never having to say you're sorry :D

Laurie, this thread has some useful info.

But you need rechargeables, just a question of which ones to get. I still love my Varta 15 min charge. There seem to be lots of good choices however.

Three for me, and so far that has always been enough, I find I get HEAPs of photos from each battery, possible because I do chimp much, or maybe because I dont' delete any shots while shooting ?

I always carry a spare but sometimes I have left it in the car and guess what, those times I always run out.

I have 3.

Only on rare occasions I need to use one of my spares. My third battery gets more use for purposes other than photography.

I have three . But i've rarely had to go the second one .I'm pretty frugal .I always turn the cam off when i'm walking round and the battery usually covers me for a full day .

What else for GC? Applying electrical shocks to parts of your body?

I have 3 batteries, probably one more than I really need.

I recently bought another giving me one genuine, and two ebay brand ones.

My reasoning for this was the poor behaviour of batteries in the cold weather, in particular ambient temperatures of around zero. I wanted more power. :D Had nothing to do with time without being able to recharge.

2x EN-EL3 for the D70

4x 5xAA sets - 2x for the SB-800, 2x for SB-600 (despite the SB-600 taking only 4xAA - can interchange the spare set for the SB-600 in the 800 if I'm hitting it harder than secondary fill flash on the 600).

I try to never go anywhere without a spare. Thus if I'm working with a camera that takes one battery, I'll have a second in a pocket. If I'm using a 2-battery grip on the camera I'll instead have a third in a pocket. Similarly I carry a spare set of 4xAAs (or 8x if I'm using my flash's external power pack).

I have 3 (Canon) cameras that use the same battery, and I've built up a bit of a collection: I took 5 spares to Africa with me because I didn't know how long I'd be away from power. As it turned out that was overkill: two spares would have been plenty!

Nope. Can't have too many, only too few.

For D70 & D2x, 2 x batteries each, for SB800 10 X (2500mAh) AA NiMh rechargeables.
(10x cell AA recharger unit, takes longer but find batteries last longer)

For travelling, 100w inverter + power board to "charge on the go" :P
+ 1000A Jumpstarter to charge when "stopped"

 No. Definitly not.

I had 2 ebay ones powering a halogen bike light setup. Was all OK until I overloaded the batteries and blew the internal fuse in one of them.
