Wireless lighting system

I am considering a wireless lighting system for my D1x.
I have an SB800 ,sb600 and a sb24
I can use the sb600 on camera and use the 800 in su4 mode with a small flash slave on the 24.

But
This system does not work well in ambient light and I want to use the system to do sport portraits
and as fill flash for a series of grass track bike shots that I am working on.
All indicators are that the pocket wizards are the best solution even for the CLS (should I get a d2x)
There are reports the cls does not work well over distance (10m ) in ambient light.

Trouble is that pocket wizrads(an inevitable purchase no matter which way I go) are expensive about 400 each)
And a d2x is out of the budget.

I found the follow link on ebay
Does anyone know of them or an Aus supplier I can talk to ???

Thanks and regards

Owen, order the D2X and 3 pocket wizards.
Then ask your boss for a pay rise.

Seriously though, I would be very interested if anyone has any experience at using these pocket wizards to control flash in daylight over extended distances.

Cheers
John

John,

Yes, Pocket Wizard is a good to have if you want to have a flexibility of wireless flash system and it can control more wireless flashes + cameras.

The Pocket Wizard only works with camera has the 10 pin connector
(F90/F4/F5/ D1/D100/D200/ D2).

It works with all modern light meter as Sekonic with installed wireless module.

Yes, I have a set of 4.

To use with the SB600/800, better save up and get the SU800 Wireless Speedlight commander

Thanh, why would you need the SU800?
Isn't the idea to mount a pocket wizard onto the hot shoe of the camera and a pocket wizard onto each remote flash?
Then they all talk to each other?
Or am I missing something? PS: Owen, bad news. Your boss said no to the pay rise.

Cheers
John

They are two difference stuffs.

The SU800 is difference concept and only works with Nikon Speedligh as SB800/600 and it's cheaper than the Pocket Wizard but does not have all features in controlling as the PW.

The PW can be used with any flash as METZ, Sigma, etc.... and heaps of features for other, not only with flash or lighting system, with camera set up as remote or slave.

Thanh, I think the SU800 and speedlights transmit info between each other with pre-flashes. And I think the PW uses wifi or something so that the PW communication is more reliable if there is a lot of ambient light. Is that right?

Yes, correct!
The SU800 only controls the flash and only flash.
The PW can use for flash and control the remote or slave cameras.

i got a plus kit and a multimax. they're the best. hopefully getting 2 more multimax's soon :)

also worth a mention. quantum freewires. also if you want to go cheaper get some of the older quantum radio slaves. they're still good too way more reliable than ebay slaves.

had the ebay slaves. they're ok for temp use but their the most unreliable pieces ever. i've had a heap of missed shots and eventually one of the rx's crapped out so i went with some wizards.
