Hi All,
The weirdest thing has just occured. I have just done some photoshop manipulation of a photo I was about to upload to the forum, and went (as usual) to save it as a jpeg (from RAW) but I don't have the option to save as jpeg...very strange. I can't think of any logical reason why this may be. The only options I have of saving to in photoshop are: PSD, CIN, PDF, RAW or TIF. Can anyone help me out here? Thanx in advance,

I had a quick look on my PC
and pretty much what you are saying is also happening on my PC.
The save as function doesn't give me jpg.
Try file, saving for web.
That should solve your immediate problem

Edit - you can’t save 16 bit images in jpeg

I've had this problem before, not with PS, but with saving images off the net and in Windoze photo editor. As wierd as it sounds, you may have to empty your temporary Internet Files folder, even though you aren't using IE.

Thanx Cristiand, I tried doing this but it only allowed me to then save as GIF...this has me VERY perplexed. On that note, could it be a virus of some sort? What antivirus software are people running these days?

change the colour depth to 8bit and not 16bit

i dont use the 'save for web' feature, it strips exif data out of jpegs which i dont like. (though unless youre using the beta raw nef convertor for photoshop, youre EXIF data wont be getting pulled out of your raw's anyway, the standard NEF plugin for CS is faulty in that regard.)

Image menu, then "mode" then choose 8bits per channel.

JPEG cant be 16bit.

Hmm..interesting! I managed to change to 8bit and it's all fine now. Does that mean that the setting changed to 16bit by default? Hm...thanx all for your help, very much appreciated!

If you are using RAW it is 16 bit

raw = 16 bit. jpeg = 8bit. CS will work with wahtever the default of the image you open is.

Pretty well as the others have pointed out...each time you take an image in RAW it will load into PS as a 16 BIT file. When you go to save it then your only options are TIFF or PS file. Go to IMAGE/MODE and convert to 8 BIT in order to save as a JPEG.

Change to 8bit colour space and I go from having a choice of 6 formats to 16, and yes that includes jpg. Amazing what you learn on these forums...

It didn't keep the exif data though - data pane only gives the file info repeated in the exif section. It's reporting an exif colour space of sRGB. Should it be different?

sRGB is fine. In regards to your Exif...where are you reading it? Are you transferring your images from the camera or flashcard using Nikon Transfer?

Nope, using Explorer from the XS-Drive II. Don't think it matters though, since looking at the .NEF files in Photoshop shows the exif data, but once converted to 8 bit colour space and saved as jpeg photoshop only gives the file data.

If you are using Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) to convert your NEFs then there is an option at the bottom of the screen for the bit depth of the image to be loaded into PhotoShop (I am using PS Elements 3). Once you set this it will default for subsequent images. It may be prefereable to use 16 bit, do all the PP you can in 16 bit and then convert to 8 bit in PS. In Elements 3 much of the functionality does not support 16 bit so I don't get much of a choice.

Nope, using CS. Been tossing up whether to grab a copy of E3 on the grounds that it's simpler and geared to photogs, but still undecided.
