Okay, what does your desk look like right now. No cheating and cleaning up before taking the photo'. Winner is open to general vote if you like. The sickest mind is usually judged by the cleanest desk. We are not looking for art this time.

Here's mine complete with my two cats (Gin Gin keeping warm on my PC and Monty sitting on my Graphics tablet ). Guess which room is the warmest in the house?

My desk is normally a little tidier than this. And it wouldn't be me without a fish eye shot (20% defish in DxO)

My trouble is I have a new "desk" every second day.... Here is one of my desks from a couple of weeks ago. As you can see I use a reverse scan monitor



And my office is rather cold!

Please note the special touches such as:
- overloaded power point
- unpaid billls just scattered on the floor
- vaguely important pieces of paper stapled straight onto the wall
- 200 DVD cases I have no use for
- Missing gaps in the carpet tiles
- side panel of the computer leaning against table leg (took it of 3 months ago and still haven't replaced it).

Geez - if this challenge had been thrown out two days ago my desk would have looked like a war zone. I was really good yesterday though and cleaned it up. Thanks Colcam.

I live in one room of a share house, so you get (left to right): my tool box, like the ones you see on the back of tradesmen's utes. Full of tools, oddly enough. The black box is a PC with a toy UPS on top of it and a 29AH battery on the floor behind it, then a laptop on the desk, a couple of monitors with some DVDs above them. To the right is a folding bike then a recumbent, leaning on a shelf that haas boxes of stuff Plus you get a bit of me. Kinda.

This is a good thread - my wife now realises there are other people out there as messy as me!!!

We live in a small apartment . That's actually pretty clean as things go, it was better a few days ago, but is now cluttered with borrowed filum cameras and a brand new SB600 box & manual (thanks Birdy ).

I won't clutter up this thread with the most important detail of our desk, but here's the most important aspect for anyone that missed it

A deliberate typo (if such a thing exists) - I've never used film on an SLR before and am looking forward to it . Which bit of Kiwiland are you from?

I certainly didn't clean up, I'd probably prefer to post my desk at work, my room is fairly trashed at the moment.

Here's mine, guaranteed uncleaned. Only alteration is the strategic placement of a copy of the HHGTTG, to avoid any suspicion of un-geekness...

but it's legacy Silicon Graphics just like my monitors

Neither have I . The camera on the right with the strap hanging down is an F80, behind it is an F65

optogamut, All 5 speakers sit there out of the way. When I need to use them, leftmost goes behind me (perched on a wardrobe shelf), rightmost sits on the bed. Nothing like ghetto surround setups

Couldn't get to my camera to take a shot of the clutter because of all the clutter........

Wow... Great topic. I gotta look at my desk and work out whether I want to risk damaging my camera by photoing it... Then work out whether I will embarass myself enough by posting it!

I forgot to mention the significant objects in my favourite space...

It's hard to see but the the conical glass object on the shelf directly behind the black desk lamp is the inaugural "Thanh Ho Outstanding Member of the Year Award". Already a priceless collectors item!

The guitar is an electric classical/spanish, made in Korea but still gives beautiful tones. (Bought specifically to play Dire Straits "Private Investigations" - I couldn't afford a Gibson Chet Atkins or a Ramirez which were Knopfler's instruments of choice for the piece.)

However, by far the most significant item in the pic is the photo on the wall, one of two I have hung in the study. Taken by a RAAF photographer chasing in a Macchi jet trainer, it shows two F-111s flying into the sunset above East Sale in Victoria. The date was April 2, 1987 and this would be the last flight of the lead aircraft. An hour or so later it crashed near Tenterfield, NSW, on it's way back to Amberley, killing the pilot (my brother) and his navigator. A pretty special photo and quite poignant with the planes streaking towards the sunset. It was featured in the RAAF Calendar the following year with a caption explaining the tragic circumstances under which it was taken. Naturally, it's one of my treasured possessions.

Wow, Simon - what a special thing to have to remind you of your brother and something tangible to treasure along with the great memories you have of him. Thanks for sharing this story with us.

Wow thanks for sharing that Manta. You don't happen to know the name of the photographer do you? The dates and places fit when a mate of mine was a photographer for the RAAF. He doesn't talk much about his work, but when he does he has amazing stories.

Your namesake actually: Mal Lancaster, a prodigious talent in this type of work. He has taken some magical images over his career.

Thanks for the name, I'll ask Jason (my mate) about Mal Lancatser, I am sure that they know each other.

Here's mine!



Very messy. Twin 19" LCDs for PP. Then there's my iPAQ just to the right of the monitors (sitting on a hub), then to the left there's a flatbed scanner, USB hub, Sandisk card reader, then a neg scanner (being used as a place to sit my CD spindle on). Then assorted rubbish across my desk (what a mess!). Underneath is my workstation (on the left, grey cabinet) and my server (on the right, black cabinet). Then cable hell under the desk!

The room is shortly to be renovated hence the lack of care about keeping it tidy!

Sorry to hear about your brother I lost quite a few mates in my years in the RAAF it was always hard. They are still remembered and still missed.

this is a tad messy though i think neat compared to a few

My desk is about to be shown.

Ok...here's my desk AS IS - no tidying. You see my beloved old D70, the 70-200VR, my printer, dual monitor setup and a whole lot of crap that I don't know exactly what to do with but has meaning in my life - i.e to put it away would be silly as I use it all the time, and weirdly enough, through all that paperwork I know where everything is. It's funny isn't it - I have changed over the years, used to be a COMPLETE neat freak, now I have a more chilled out approach, it's cool . Life is cool, but now i'm just rambling....there...Oh yeah, there's a tool box there - I love to think I'm a home handy man (hahahahahahahahahaha)...erm no...

Now where's my bed.....
