I've just phoned up the SCG to make sure that I can take my camera in and been told that only small household cameras are allowed in - nothing professional!!

I asked what a professional camera was and she said:
"anything big, and not small and silver!!!!"

So I told her that my camera was a big black slr and that I'm not a professional and she said that it would be taken off me at the door.

Pardon my french, but:

Now, I've actually got to go and watch the fucking game!!!!!!!

I'm sure you are relieved in a weird kinda way, having someone take your brand new D200 from you as you walk in the gate would be worse than seeing someone drop it!?

I look mine to the Cricket in Janurary and only had minor problems, none getting in, only in the last 30 minutes of the days play when a security guard said my lens was too long and could I put it away I was using the 70-300G at the time.

Print that out and take it with you, but I wouldn't be surprised if the following clause was invoked:

Any item which, as deemed by the Sydney Cricket & Sports Ground Trust, can cause public nuisance or offence to any other user of the venue.

Where the problem comes in is that I think you'll find that the rights for professional photography (however that's defined) at the S.C.G. have been assigned to Getty Images. No "pro" is allowed to take photos there unless they're working for Getty (if I recall correctly). That of itself is a crazy position (who owns the SCG anyway?).
So if another user of the venue (e.g. Getty) might be offended by you using that equipment, you might be in trouble.

This has ended up in a completely stupid place, but I thought it might help you to understand how it got there...

I've never had a problem bringing in my gear to the SCG (D70s, 80-200/2.. However, I do most of my shooting during the reserves game when I am able to get down to the fence. I prefer watching the actual game from my stand seat when the main game is on, so I've not recently done a lot of photography during the main event.

In my experience, the people on the door are really only looking for video cameras and the like.

Thank you everyone. I tell you I was seething when I left, and left before printing that out. I was all fired up to take some fantastic shots with my new camera but left it behind.

Anyway, got to the ground sans camera and sat in my seat. What did I see in the row behind me when I turned round......a canon 350d with 70-300mm lens mounted!!

It seems that the security people at these venues wouldn't know their elbows from their arseholes.

I feel for you and have suffered the same problem. Being turned away and missing the game because you have to take your camera back to the car/home/hotel sure makes your blood boil. Like im going to let those gorillas mind my pride and joy for me!

I reckon they should set a length (as in physical length not optical ) and say thats it .Any bigger and you can't bring it in as it may be a hazzard blah blah .Everyone knows where they stand then .Its not the sort of thing you need to find out at the gate after doing your best to find out through correct channels before hand , only to find that the guy on the gate isn't a camera geek and doesn't know whats what .
