My D70 just died

Postby gooseberry on Sat Jan 08, 2005 5:07 am

:(

Just recharged my battery and plugged it into the camera. Nothing appears on the top control panel (normally the no. of shots left still appears even when it is turned off). Turn it on - top control panel is still blank, but CF card light flashes continually. Switch it off - CF light still flashes. Take out CF card. Put it back. Same thing - CF light flashes. Turn it on - same thing. Turn it off and take out battery. Replace battery and still the same problem.

Looks like a few people have had this happen.

From one of the threads, one guy mentions that it apparently has something to do with the AE sensor malfunctioning - and when this happens the camera won't turn on and the CF card light flashes when a card is present.

Dammit - gonna have to take it into the Service Centre on Monday. Here's hoping that it is a speedy repair. Wish me luck. :?

See if they will loan you a camera? Never hurts to ask. Hopefully since the camera has been around for a little while now they have everything they need to fix it on hand.

gooseberry,

Sorry to hear about your D70 malfunction :(

Why does it always happen on weekends, when Service Centres are closed, damit :!:

I’ll go with fozzie on this one gooseberry - weekends are a magnet for equipment failure. I hope it gets sorted soon.

Bad news re your camera.. its fairly dissapointing that you pay so much for something and it stuffs up.. i wonder if other dslr cameras have as many issues... touchwood, mine is all good so far at 2000 pics
Thanks, Trevor

Thanks guys...

Yep, a bit disappointing for it to happen - I've had it for about ten months now (one of the early adopters), and I suppose if it was gonna happen, good that it was within the warranty period.

Was planning on shooting a lot this weekend too - now it's just sitting in my dry cabinet until I can take it in on Monday. Probably should have checked out the cam on Thursday night and if I found the problem, could have taken it in on Friday.

oh well... as the saying goes, "sh## happens"

:D Got my D70 back today - one week in the Nikon service centre.

Apparently they replaced the "LIGHT MEASURING FPC" - whatever that is, must be something to do with the exposure metering system.

Seems like it could be a common problem with the early batches - at least 8 people I have heard of have the same problem with their D70s.

Did a quick test and everything seems fine - woohoo, just in time for my trip overseas on Wed.

Too bad I'm stuck at work and unable to take more photos just at the moment.
