Does anyone else have the problem where they go to some sort of 'event' and spend most of their time looking at what the photog's are using?

I was at the tsunami appeal cricket match yesterday at the MCG and spent too much time looking at the group of three nikon wielders sitting apart from the canon crowd.

Oddly enough it looked like one guy was down there with just(just???) a 70-200VR on a D2H.. someone else had what i'm pretty sure was the 200-400VR ( nice! )..

Made me wonder what qualifications you need in order to get a press pass to an event like that though, with the equipment being used not -that- far above what the majority are using here..

What do you think I do when I'm at the Formula 1?

Whenever i see a 'real' camera being used i always have a look to see what it is, regardless of whether it's on TV or i'm walking past some pro (or wanna-be pro) press photogs.

I saw a lot of C@nn0N lenses during the cricket telecast. As usual.

Hey petal666, just a quick question for you.
I know you must enjoy this forum as I'm sure most of us enjoy having you here, and I know that you must be happy with your canon, but after reading a lot of these threads, do you ever get even the slightest urge to try a D70?

I'd never even thought about it till you mentioned it. As you said, I'm quite happy with my 10D,it does just about everything I want it to do. The only complaint that I can't work around is the start up time but I have a battery grip (major drawback of the D70) so I just leave it on the whole time I am shooting. There is no chance of me every changing as I have >>$10k invested in some top level lenses so I am a Canon person for a while yet.

The 10D has a bad startup time?

It's not the lens on the camera that you can judge a pro by...it's the image that he captures that counts. I knew a pro who shot most of his stuff...including portraits...on a 35mm lens. But boy, what he could with that lens!

Is that why your 10D is up for sale? 20D or 1D mkII for you?

I used to play the spotting game, but nowadays I can pretty much tell straight off what camera body and lens a person has from a casual glance. It's no fun anymore... Except today, there was Mamiya MF of some kind (I ain't familiar with Mamiya lineup) on a heavy duty Manfrotto dolly tripod at Penrith Plaza in use behind the baby portrait stall. That got a second glance, as it intriqued me. Not many shopping mall places bother with larger than 35mm equipment, some even shoot with pieces of crap like the Coolpix 5700.

MHD - I have the same problem.

I've stopped looking at hot babes, and am more interested in what lens the dude with her has on his cam.

And I've started going up to people with the D70 and start a chat about lenses too. Man this little camera has some voodoo in it.

why is it that across the different international media sources i watch and see, almost every photog is shooting canon?

Am i simply missing something, or has canon really really taken off ? I cant remember the last time i saw a nikon.

And yes, whenever im watching news and theres photographers incidently in the picture ill be squinting to see what theyre packin

In Australia yes, Canon are favourites with media sources - but I'd have to disagree with international media. The US is fairly evenly split, ratio depending on state/area (papparazzi's tend to prefer Canon), Asia media are mainly still with Nikon.
