Lens hood question

The Nikon 17-35 f/2.8 lens hood (HB-23) is quite shallow and made for the large angle of view this lens has in the 35mm format.

The Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 lens hood (HB-31) is much deeper, because this is a DX lens.

Question: can the HB-31 hood be used with the 17-35 if the lens is mounted on a DSLR? Will it fit mechanically?

Not sure how many of our members have both lenses and are able to comment, but you never know...
