Just thought I'd share this with you.

I have just deleted 52 Gb of images. Each time I complete a shoot I go through the shots, delete the ultra crappy (OOF, poor framing and the like) then split the remainder into those I'll PP and those not good enough or too like already selected shots.

As of today I have amassed 52Gb of shots this year not chosen for PP, but not deleted. So rather than just hoard them I've trashed them. They are gone forever.

Oh and before you tell me hard disks are cheap. I know. My PC currently has 3 x 250Gb SATA hard disks and I have a 250Gb Western Digital Media Centre for backup.

I did this once.

Accidentally

Even now with my images backed up on 2x DVD's, I'm still worried about deleting them off my HD.

I'm proud of you Peter - at least you have a workflow which means you know where your good pics are!

Never done that ... but then again I shoot Canon so not many awful photos

In all seriousness .. I know exactly what you have done. I have been wanting to do it for some time ... just need the guts! Why keep photos you are never going to present ... all they do is take up space.

Definitely brave, and a very wise move. I really need to do something similar, there's so many shots I know I'll never look at again (at least until computers are fast enough to view RAW files like JPEGs).

Personally I couldn’t do this, for me a lot of photos aren’t taken for critique or display, merely a record of my life and my family’s life. Only the ones that really have sucked, out of focus etc, get canned. For me every photo is a memory when I re-visit it even if it really has no ‘photographic’ quality.

I wish I had the courage to do this and my WD media centre (300gb) is fast running of of space.

Did it leave you with a feeling of sickness when you did it or was it a case of 'done it now - oh well!' ?

Time for me to delete some of my many not so good images.

I have 3 weeks off work coming up soon so a perfect time to edit/delete some of the non-keepers.

That took guts, Peter, but I know the feeling. I have about 100gb of images on one drive, about 50gb on another and backed up to a 250gb external plus DVD/CDs.
I tend to be fairly brutal at the shutter pressing stage as well as the first look stage. I have spent all day out on a camera club trek and taken five shots Sort of a large format approach to photography.

Next time you are feeling like a bit of a clean up, I have a few sheds around my property that need your gentle touch!!
