Every manufacturer has issues, some just not as visible as others

That happened a year or so ago but for some reason it's been reported several times in recent months as if it were a recent event. Nothing to worry about IMO. I have a fleet of about 100 Dell notebooks and they've all been rather good, certainly not time bombs or anything.

It all looks like marketing from the opposition.

Well, I haven't noticed any recalls from the manufacturers saying you need to return your sensors due to a safety issues, so no I don't think it's likely.

Over the past few years there have been several Dells with exploding batteries, and at least one PowerBook. But these were units that had recalls on them AGES before: the manufacturer had tried to get the batteries swapped (at no cost to the laptop owner) but for whatever reason the owners didn't get around to it.

Wasn't there a recall on Nikon EN-EL3 batteries a while ago?...

Dave, I think this is the big recall, it affects 18% of Dell laptops made in the period and could cost $300M US. It was announced yesterday.

It even made the Macquarie Network News, which I fed into my radio show today.

And yes, they too mentioned that the batteries were made by Sony.

Not that I think that's significant.

Not too much, anyway.

Apparently. This is the second battery recall in less than a year for them. Early indication seems to be they're blaming the cells themselves rather than the design or construction. As basically everyone uses Sony cells I'm wondering if we'll see other recalls as well.

Should hear from my account manager tomorrow and if he has any interesting details I'll pass them along.

I can't wait until Sony PlayStation Portable's start exploding in people's hands... and then we'll hear Sony say that even if they've exploded, unless the screens have 12 dead pixels, you can't return it.

FWIW I haven't spoken to my account manager so I don't have any new details in that regard but I have checked almost 100 batteries and so far not a single one is effected by the recall. I was hoping for some new ones given their short life

I thought exploding batteries in Dell lappy's was a normal 'feature'

Not the MacBooks tho’ - but, although the MacBook is apprently OK, they do run very hot - so Apple have changed the name from laptop to notebook

I've actually hear companies use that line before with "we call them notebooks, not laptops" because they don't want to be held liable for burning off someone's thighs... or crotch.

just went to north sydney apple store to order my replacement battery.
4-6 weeks (read: months)

doubtful, i have some friends with powerbooks from 2004 and their batteries are fine.

chances are if its lasted 3 years it should be able to last another 3 or more.

Hooray! A new iBook G4 battery is on the way to Coffs Harbour. I needed one anyway, I was only getting 2 hours from my old battery!
