Getting harder to keep up!

Postby sheepie on Thu Jan 13, 2005 9:33 am

Hey Gary!

It's getting harder and harder to keep up with all the messages - logged off early last night, and this morning there's well over 100 to wade through!

Would be interesting to see a graph of the growth of the forum from a messages per day point of view. Are you able to do this?

Again, well done on getting this whole thing off the ground :)

Sheepie,

Good question. There are a few graphing tools within the standard Linux distro, but none of them (AFAIK) pertain directly to phpbb.

We can look on phphacks.com, because what you're asking strikes me as not being unreasonable, and it's quite likely that someone else will have already invented this wheel.

At the very worst, pulling the numbers directly from MySQL is a no brainer (which helps me big time, I can assure you) so it would just be a matter of then writing a routine to render the graphs in a meaning ful way. I would think that this sort of data could be a useful add-on in the rotating/random section of the main page. I've got that setup so that it's an easy change to add in extra stuff.

Another point of interest, which may or may not be avilable depending how the site is hosted, would be to look at bandwidth usage for the past 6 months or so. Would be interesting to see how much info is flowing.

OK ...

I've found a phpbb statistics package. It'll give us stuff like new members per month, posts per month, and so on.

Bandwidth is a whole different ballgame, and most of what goes through here is simply text, which means that there's not a great deal of load on the connection.

I'll need to see what I can pick out of the MRTG graphs on the server, and/or if I can isolate those to any particular host as defined to Apache.

Having said that, it should be obvious we also host a few other sites - all low usage - but if they're active at the same time that this site is, then the effect of the total usage may well be felt at some point.

When we cut across to the higher bandwidth connection we'll actually cut all (logical) servers across, because we are only using one webserver to handle all of the different sites. That means that the bandwidth usage will come with the server.

Oh yes, cutting across to the higher bandwidth connection will be my next priority, and I'm anticipating having this completed before the end of next week. And I'm hoping to do this with minimal (almost zero) disruption to the availability of the system!

As nice as it is that it has grown, I hope we don't lose the "family" sort of feel. I feel like I know the people through the posts and it's getting harder and harder to keep up with the new people. Oh god, it's the girl in me coming out again. Sorry!

I know what you mean Marvin. I am new to this particular forum, but agree about the friendly feel. There seems to be a lot of goodwill here and I like it :D

And I intend that the friendly atmosphere remain.

Even if I have to beat it into you.

In reality it is very similar to the corner store versus the big retailer - let’s hope we will remain the corner store!!!
