Step up rings for Filter use

Just thinking out aloud, can I run with 67mm CPL and UV filters on my Kit Lens and use a 62mm > 67mm step up ring to use same filters on my 62mm threaded telephoto lens? I know it's a fiddle ridden fix but cheaper for this impoverished gardener in the end perhaps?

Absolutely. And it's not an impoverished solution. That's precisely what step-up/step-down rings rings are for.

That's what I'll do

Thanks for the positive reply Onyx. I thought I might have a solution there. That's the way I'll go then.

Cheers,

Matty.

Matty, that is exactly what I am doing, not so much with the UV, but certainly with the CPL.

I also have a step up ring so I can use my 58mm UV filter on the 50mmF1.8 lens. (which I think is a 52mm or 55mm filter size)

It is an excellent solution.

Onyx, the bit after your link is wrong - PixSpot lives...

Matty,
Yes, going the other way can be an issue if you go from a 62mm filter to a 67mm lens there can be problems :( You in effect decrease the lens size from 67 to 62. As long as the filter is larger then the lens it is good.

Brass rings, if you can get them, is better than the average aluminium's. They don't 'grip' so can be detached from the filter and lens mount easily.

I don't have a brass one and it's such a hassle getting it off sometimes. All when I am about to miss the shot!

Good luck with that, I had enough trouble sourcing the two that I have - including having to endure attitude from some little mongrel in Ted's - and they are both aluminium presumably (very light)

Good Advise

Brass rings - got it, I know all about alloy ring grip with my last camera's filter set ups. I ended up having to smear just the very lightest amount of lubricant to the female threads which solved the problem up to this date. I still have that camera and got it dusty / dirty often, thus the grit in the threads prob. I'm a more consciensious camera owner now! :D
