What lens you most likely to use to shoot candids at a wedding? does a flash fill in neccesary, which in this case the wedding is indoor? or faster lens will do?

please shed somelight,

Hi Peter,

I am not a wedding photographer as such, I tend to do them by referal only and so I do about 8-12 a year. I shoot using my doco style and consequently I might only use flash for about 5% of the images.

For most of the indoor images I now use a 135mm f2 AF lens, a 50mm f1.4 AF and an older Nikon 24mm f2 MF lens. I have zooms as well however I will only use them now in bright consditions.

Have a go at using the 50mm f1.4 without a flash... shoot at 800 ISO wide open and you should get some interesting images (before the wedding practise shooting handheld at about 1/30th of a second).

Remember, most couples want to remember the ambiance of the day as well as the people; the opportunity to shoot available light and capture images of people enjoying themselves without the blare of a flash will help capture that mood and memory.

Hope this is a help! Ants

I prefer not to use flash, which require fast glass for indoor work, and a camera that can push the ISO.

Depends how much working space you have I should say.

A 50/1.8 or /1.4 should do most of your shots, a 35/2 able to get some group shots, and a 85/1.8 or /1.4 can do plenty from far away.
