Can this be done?

I was chatting to a tog the other day and he suggested it. Can a slave/drive unit attach to the flash, then mount the flash on a tripod and ...tada!! a lil studio flash!

(am I mad?! :))

What parts would I need?

There's a couple of ways this can be accomplished.

A syncro-eye style device could be attached. This is a light sensitive trigger that reacts to another flash unit. That unit triggers the eye, which triggers your other flash.

Or you could just use extension cables.

Or a Pocket Wizard.

If you are using one of these, just be wary that if your master slave fires a pre-flash (e.g. E-TTL on Canon) it will fire the slave & the slave may not have charged in time to fire for the real flash.

what about the cheap styled radio slave and triggers on ebay? Mostly made in China, has anyone had any experience with them?

Would they be recommendable? Looks like I'm going to have my old Sunpak AF4000 and a new Canon Speedlight 580EX.

I'm guessing that the setup will include:

1: transmitter plugged into camera
2: both flash units attached to tripods in the studio and connected to the recievers

I will then need one transmitter and two recievers.... I would like to make the order tonight, I don't mean to rush for responses, I just have a shoot coming up and need to practice, so I need to get the gear :)

Advice REALLY appreciated...

Thanks,

Rob
