Just found this while cruising around. Not really sure of the point of making a wired remote out of a wireless remote, but hey!! Why not.

I can understand the author's desire to trigger the remote while some distance from the camera and not in front of it. Could be quite useful approach in that regard and could be applied to any of the "third-party" remotes too.
The thing is you still have to have the IR remote in front of the camera and now positioned so that you don't accidentally move it by tugging on the wire to it. I have visions of needing a frame to hold it in position ...
Not having a D70 in front of me (sigh!) I can't remember if it has a connector for a wired remote. If such a connector existed it'd have to be easier/neater to build your own wired remote I think.

The D70 has no facility for a wired shutter release.

If you tape a piece of aluminium foil on the front of the camera near the infrared sensor then you can trigger the camera from the rear and it works beautifully. Position is not critical and the beam is broad enough to be accurate from amost any position.
