Any hints on when printing B&W, it tends to come out with a bit of a purpleish hue to them.

Does anyone have any adjustments I could use to give them a more true B&W or is this a problem I just have to live with.

Have you got a calibrated monitor and Epson profile loaded?

Pretty sure someone asked the question last week at my photo club about how someone with a R1800 got such good blacks and he had a very specific routine to do the conversion in Photoshop. Someone also said the driver can be told to use only black ink.

My pixma is going to get all the colours replaced with blacks once I settle on my next colour printer, which will hopefully be a R1800.

print with review>
move to the print box>copies and pages, click and choose print settings>
set media type> change ink from colour to black>
Set advance settings to Photo 720dpi>
print

EDIT: the above is how it is done on a Mac, it should be similar on a PC

Wow - been a long time since I've posted here....

Anyway, I got an Epson R350 a couple of months ago.
I knew it was capable of great results, except I wasn't getting them.

Following this guide it walks you through setting PS up so that the printer driver manages colour instead of PS.

My results after this were... Worse!

It turns out Epson -in all their wisdom- decided not to include the paper profiles on the driver CD.

You can get these here (scroll down, ICC profiles)

However, the profiles come with no documentation and have abbriviated names. Heres a decyphered version:

SPR340 R350 MPHW.icm Matt paper heavy weight
SPR340 R350 PGPP.icm Premium Glossy Photo Paper
SPR340 R350 PP.icm Photo Paper
SPR340 R350 PQIJ.icm Photo Quality Ink Jet paper
SPR340 R350 PSPP.icm Premium semigloss photo paper
SPR340 R350 UPGP.icm Ultra Premium Glossy

This was the cause of much hair pulling and wasted consumables so I hope I've saved someone the same heartache.

Well you just replace the colours with black. if you have an epson you can get grey ink to replace the colours.
the drivers stay the same, but instead of trying to mix colour to get black its just mixing black.
Colour shifts in b&w printing are caused by the printer not laying the same amount of colour down. To get black the colours are supposed to be printed equally, but as with all things, that only happens in a perfect world.
Getting rid of the colours is the best solution if you have an alternative to print colour.

Do all of you always use the Gloss Optimizer ?

I can't seem to see the difference when I use it or not.
Does it serve any purpose like protecting the inks under it or am I barking up the wrong tre here.

My thinking is Mic's comment about PMing was an attempt at humour. Nothing more nothing less.

Now back on topic... Mic my undertsanding is the Gloss Optimiser adds a shiny coating wherever ink is output so the paper has a uniform gloss ie so there is gloss over the spots that got ink since the ink covered up the gloss the paper started with.

As for the B & W tones. A lot depends on the paper you use too. I have found that Ilfor Pearl is by far the best and I use the Ilford supplied Epson R1800 profile for that paper. I also use QImage to print and have that printer profile and my minotor profile loaded into QImage

When you choose B&W in the Epson printing screen the printer defaults to one black cart. Still I have also noticed a bit of purple or blue myself. There are two solutions I think that will work for you.

1. There is a B&W conversion scheme for Photoshop (if you are a user) that may help and I can share with anyone who wants it. Just ask and I'll post it or a link to it.

2. Check out piezeography.com. They have complete sets of black inks that provide stunning results on matte papers. You can swap them in and out with your color set and never have any waste or mess. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Simon I have a spare i850 lying around here, int the black cart bigger than the colours??? Sorry I'm still alittle confused. Do oyu have a link to more info, Google didnt turn me up anything.

not to sure on that model, on my one the colours are the same size as the blacks so you can just fit them in. You just need to find a black thats the same size as your colours, or just get your colours refilled with black although i'm not sure on mixing the two inks as i've read you should really be running a cleaning cartridge through the machine before you swap as some inks can clog the system when combined.

I also have a r310 epson with a sinopis CIS system, when I eventually run out of ink it may be easier to use this printer.

Are the inks form fom inksupply available in Aust anywhere??
