What`s a photo worth?

A guy has messaged me on Flickr saying he would like to buy one of my shots of Bridge climbers on the Harbour Bridge.
He would like to use it as a banner on a "working site" whatever that means.
He says he usually gets his images from royalty free sites like istockphoto and usually pays between $1 to $70 for the resolution that he needs.
He states he doesn`t need the exclusive rights to the photo.
Would anyone know what to charge for something like this?
Any pitfalls?
Any advice would be highly appreciated.

It depends on what it is worth to you. I'd sell it for $95 for one time use only as a banner at one site. Type up a quick contract to that effect, take the money and go out for a nice meal! Then go to the site and take a pic of the banner...someone else might want to buy it.

Termy, the photo is not unique, so I would price accordingly. Otherwise he may email everyone on flickr with a similar image. I would aim to fit into the guide he has expressed he is willing to pay. Good luck.

The non-exclusivity lowers the cost considerably..
The other important factor is where is he going to use it?
$70 is quite fair even less... Also note that he will not be able to use it for advertising purposes... AFAIK you need a release from the sydney harbour foreshore auth to use the SOH or SHB....

I sell my images for far less than that through other micro stock agencies... but they are on limited exposure licences (less than 300K) so are not seen, for example, on TV. This means each image can sell many many times

I sold an image of mine about a month ago for a website banner
it was just a plain old shot taken on my old point and shoot
I asked for $50US he happily paid that and it seemed like he would have paid more if I had asked
I sent him an invoice via paypal then sent a link to original file when the money was transfered
the whole transaction took 3 days from start to finish
