FF-sensor for Nikon DSLR

Postby amarkin on Thu Sep 28, 2006 9:04 pm

Not that I need such digital camera at the moment, just out of curiosity. Are there hints or rumours that Nikon will release DSLR FF-sensor in the near future?

There are always hints and rumours of this. If you do a search here for the words full frame you'll get the info you are looking for.

Would it be likely Nikon will be using F-mount on its FF-sensor DSLR?

Nothing in the pipeline that's known, Alex.

Lots of speculation though.

I heard that Nikon will be in a joint effort with what's left of Agfa to create Agfapan Cards for your digital with an FF sensor.

Closest I've heard is the comments from a Sony dude that their new full frame lenses were obviously not just for the Alpha. Presumably that means there's a beta in the pipeline and eventually we'll see a version 1.0 full frame Sony. I'd expect that since Nikon use Sony sensors that as soon as that sensor is available Nikon will announce a camera using it and within a couple of years of that you might see one retail.

Are Sony / KM lenses for their digi's DX sensor designed?

Look at it this way: How many upgrade steps are you away from a D2X?

With the d200 in DX format I think my DX/DG glass is safe for a while

You always bless the DX with a 300/2.8 giving you a 450mm equiv FoV but at no sacrifice of f/stop, remians f/2.8 at 450mm FoV.

Can you do that with the Canon FF sensor? I guess not :P

Why would they bother? How many photographers would dump their D2Xs to buy a full frame? Not many I would think. And apart from a slight gain in wide angle capability what other benefits are there? Then look at what you lose....1.5X multiplication factor is a big bonus and has made long range photography affordable. Using the center of your non DX lenses is a big bonus. 10 to 15 million pixels is more than enough for most pro shooters. I think the R&D money would be better spent on improving the current crop of cameras...not that there's much to improve.

The only bonus I could think of is if they kept the MP count the same and increased the effective area of each pixel thereby reducing the noise level....

But you cannot put a beautiful Nikkor 16mm and see the field of view that that lens offers either.

As much as I like the crop factor, I sometimes love to use a wide angle in the way nature intended.

Perhaps someone will be smart enough to design a FF sensor with a mode on the camera to switch it to DX mode, so all those wanting to utilise the functionability of DX, still can....

Surely that's possible ?!?

Just a thought...

Dave,

Canon already has that facility - it's called "Crop in PP" :) - and the D2X has the next version of it in it's crop mode for the sensor.

But if you manage to put the DX with a 300/2.8 on a FF camera, wouldn't it still be a 300 FoV?

What do you mean "DX with a 300/2.8 on a FF camera"??

DX I mean is the DX digital sensor size. Not the dedicated DX lens type.

Even with a DX lens, say 18mm... you still get a ~28mm FoV, not a 18mm FoV. The lens itself only projects a smaller image circle with different (maybe easier) optical formulas.

Ah! Thanks for clarifying Yi-P :) I was just confused as I was only thinking of DX lens :)
