macro photography versus micro photography.
whats the difference? is it in the magnification level...?

I think you'll find the difference is in the marketing. AFAIK they are one and the same. eg the Nikon "macro" lenses are actually called Micro Nikkors

I always thought that originally micro photography referred to photos taken using a microscope and marketing took over a bit later.

Macro photography is a true 1:1 sizing, i.e., if a 6mm fly is photographed and it appears on the film or sensor as 6mm. Microphotography would bring you into the realm of larger than life.

It has nothing to do with marketing in the true sense. Any lens from Nikon that does not go greater than true life is not a micro lens but should in fact be called a macro lens.

Therefore - Tamron and Sigma follow the true definition
