Sigma may be well known for a little bit in sample variations, sometimes you may get a stellar copy and sometimes you get an average one. But even Nikon has this problem, nothing is created in perfect standard.
But from what I know, many here (including myself) has the Sigma 10-20 and they are very happy about its performance vs price ratio.

I'm quite happy with my 10-20
No problems with sharpness or anything on the d70

I got one for my wife to use on Nikon D70s and results have been excellent. Not even any vignetting which was sort of expected at 10mm. Is sharp!

I got the 10-20mm, was worried about the "QA problems", mines fine....not sure what all the fuss is about...
You know for the price of a 22" wide screen you could almost buy 2 19inch screens.... Dual screen goodness

I bought mine for my Pentax, and I've been happy to date as well.
Taken on my US Trip in May:
(some PPing, but not sharpness related!)
