Been looking closely at ring flashes to use with the D70.
Seems the Nikon ringy doesnt support iTTL whilst the Sigma EM-140 DG does.
Has anyone had experience with the Sigma flash or can refer me to any tests with D70.
When is Nikon going to bring out a iTTl ringy?

The Sigma is not yet available for the Nikon but should be soon. I doubt whether Nikon will bother.

Jenno - whoops - the last time I look at B&H they were on pre-order only. I do a lot of macro and although I have my own way of using flash I think that the price of the Sigma is far more realistic than the RRP of the Nikon in this country and it is iTTL

A few years back I considered the ring flash and did some test shots at Nikon on Broadway and really did not like the flatness of the result.

Today I use a Manfrotto dual flash adaptor - on one side I mount a Zenon Magneflash and on the D70 shoe I mount the SB800 or I use the SB800 on one of the macro arms and use the builtin flash in commander mode to fire the SB800.

Nikon ring flas sb-29 is a bit of sick, don't bother to look into it, I got one and ditched it straight away in 2 days.
Yes, I knew Sigma now got one but has got time to get one and play with, will try another time soon.

Sorry about all the questions and thanks for being patient.

Had read the use of two fashes was preferable to the flat results obtained by the ringflash but was wondering about the practicallity of using two flashes on a bracket in the field.
I'm currently focusing (excuse the pun) on flower macros and have been mainly relying on natural lighting wherever possible with some assistance from the on-board flash on rare occassions. I have the SB800 and have used it off camera with great success but its easy to run out of hands especialy when using a monopod hence my interest in the bracket.

The bracket that Birddog has (looks like something a neurosugeon would use) accomodates multiple flashes but effectively blocks the sensor on the Sc29.
Is this the one you use?

How do you find it out in the field or is it strictly an indoor toy?

I have an old sunpak flash from my pre digital days and was wondering if I can somehow bring it into use as an anciliary lighting source in this situation. Used it with a canon AE1 program so its old but I look after my gear so its in great nick

I use the Manfrotto as I said in a previous thread and use it both by hand and on a tripod.

Hand holding in the field is fine and I either use the SB800 in remote mode or the Magneflash sync’ed to the SB800 used on the hot shoe on the camera. I have the SC29 but seldom use it now.

I like using the Magneflash as it gives a nice soft flash and with the SB800 set at -7 on the camera set at 1/128th power output I find the results pleasing.

To use your old sunpack as a slave flash you will need (unless it can already be used as a slave) a slave adaptor - as I have not used one of these it might be worth a google.
