Looking for a compact dig camera for daughter for Xmas.
up to 6 megapixel, around 3x optical zoom, probably not Olympus or Fuji (those little XD cards seem dearer than SD etc)

Any suggestions?[/code]

I recently purchased the Panasonic DMC-FX01 - very compact and pretty pleased with images from it. It's VERY difficult not being too picky with a P&S after using a DSLR for a number of years.

How about a Casio Exilim or the new Samsung NV series? They both look great on the appearance, and so is image quality on P&S.

Mike,

I'd look at anything from the Nikon or Canon, Olympus or Pentax ranges.

If it's for your daughter, you'll need to ensure it has these photographic features:

It needs to be slim and sleek, and difficult for any adult to handle.

The controls should be placed contrary to any form of ergonomic design.

In keeping with its reduced size, the rear LDC panel should be microscopic. daughters don't, as a general rule, suffer from the eye problems that we older folk do. Further, and in keeping with the marketing goals of the camera, image sharpness is a myth, and to be avoided at all costs. :)

Most importantly, it should be pink in colour. Everyone knows that pink cameras take far better images than a camera of any other colour!

my daughter recently bought a CANON POWERSHOT A710 IS
(~$450)
Megapixels Optical Zoom Digital Zoom LCD Screen Size
7.1MP 6x 4x 2.5"

uses SD card and has image stabilization and good zoom
she is a diver so she also got the underwater housing(on order).

I suppose if you ask 10 different people you get 10 different answers !

i have a Canon Ixus 50 (last yrs model) that i bought for overseas travel last October.
They have since put out a couple of newer and better models. I cant fault the camera at all - it has all the features you want out of a point and shoot & isnt very expensive - i know nothing baout photography but the photos that come out of it always seem good.

Hope this helps.

Mike, I reckon the Canon P&S are hard to beat.

Powershot S1 is outstanding (a friend, and my sister both purchased and love them) (Now S2 and S3 at around $570)

Ixus 55 - bought this for my wife, huge success (Now IXUS 60 - or higher. The 60 is $360)

When you are pricing, make sure you check Landmark computers and Computer World as well as the usual suspects (JB for instance). Landmark and CW have been very cheap on cameras lately.

Even though you said no Fuji...I would recommend a Fuji F20 or F30.

Great high iso images.
