Another Insurance Question - sorry

I'm still trying to sort out some insurance for my gear.

How do I determine what value I give to the insurer for each item?

Is it the purchase price? The replacement price? Or the actual current value (ie the amount I could get by selling it)?

Replacement price

OK. But what do you do if your model of whatever equipment is not a current model.

And replacement price is RRP?

Then put the RRP.

I don't have a home, I cant insure my gear! Help! The RAC lady says I need 25,000 in valuables minimum before I can get insured. What the? Does that mean I should buy 25k worth of camera gear? Do you all know any insurance companies that just insure my gear as it is, without bundling my car n house n baby n underwear as well?

Contact an Insurance Broker and they will be able to get you insurance.

Cheers :D

You will want to check this with your insurer. I had to ask a few people to get a straight answer for my policy - I need to put down the purchase price.

That's ok, insure your D70 for 25k, when it gets knocked off you really will have 25k worth of gear :P :P :P

My gear is insured with GIO and separately itemised on my contents policy (for extra premium of course). It covers me anywhere in Australia and New Zealand (which is good since I'm off to NZ next year). It also covers me for 30 days anywhere else in the world as long as I tell them in advance of the trip dates. The gear is insured at Australian RRP since if you make a claim then like most (if not all) insurers they don't give you the cash, they give you a voucher to buy the gear at an Aussie camera store.

Thanks Stubbsy.
That's what I need to find out. I'll have to give NRMA a ring to clarify how they do it.

How expensive would the insurance be? I only have 3 equipments in want to insure. (Sony Vaio laptop, Canon 30D + 24-105). Would it cost more than 50 bucks a month to get it insured?

I insured a D200 + grip, 17-35, 50, 80-200, Metz (possibly SB800), tripod (I think) and a bunch of other stuff, and the additional premium (based on coverage as per Stubbsy's post) was about an additional $30 per month.

Bear this in mind when you review your contents cover, and the basic level of cover provided for cameras and other electical equipment maybe a lot less than what it's worth.

Oh excellant. That looks more affordable for me. I just need to get these insured because my previous equipment got burgled. Also, i'll be taking some shots at nightclubs and so on and will be going to Amsterdam for 12 month next year.

Really need to get these insured.

Check to see whether your policy covers you for being overseas, otherwise, you may need to get additional travel insurance.
