Went to the airport today, so naturally took a look at the duty free shops. First stop, the booze. Yep, still expensive. Next stop, cameras.

D70 w/ kit lens $1999
D100 w/ AF Nikkor 28-100 3.5-5.6G $2399
F65 body $419

No idea about the F65, but the other two were a bit amusing. Birddog, you've spoilt us! :D :D :D

They should change the wording on photographic equipments:
GST Free instead of Duty Free

This has been the biggest rort in years. In 1973 when I came to Oz I worked for John Border Photographics.

The biggest sign was Duty Free - but it was explained to me then that as there was no viable duty the cameras were sold without sales tax.

Now for the rort: Camera retail $2,000 - Duty Free $2,000 - Tax Free $1650 - Customer gets camera cheaper - seller reclaims tax from government - seller sale price $2,000 - maximum profit - government pays seller out of taxes!!!

We preferred ”duty free” sales because we made profit over and above the ordinary joe who wanted a discount.

If only the people had known that even with the so called duty free price they could have asked for a further discount.
