Host for pics

Postby colin_12 on Wed Jan 10, 2007 6:04 pm

Hello all,
I would like a recomendation for a site to host my pics on so that I may put them into posts.
The catch is that I dont have the means to pay for the privilage.
I have tried the trial space at pbase but it will not allow file linking (according to our attachment protocol). This I presume is because I do not have a full account.
Any steering in the right direction would be great as I would like to share.

Colin,

Many people use pBase to host their images, and I'm sure that many would be using the free account.

But you do need to make sure your link is correct: in the one you tried to post, you linked to the page on which the image was hosted, rather than the actual image file itself. IOW, try to ensure that your image file link ends with .jpg ....

Also, your ISP probably provides with some free hosting space. There's no reason why that space couldn't be used either.

Yes I stuffed up the first attempt by not adding the extra script as in the FAQ file.
After that I added the script and found that it still did not like me.
I will try to utilise my isp's space.

Is this thread under the wrong section??

Either way, do a search around, plenty of members here use pbase, smugmug, flickr, and zenfolio.

They are most under a payment basis for 1 yr subscription and hosting services. At some amount of storage given or some host will give you unlimited storage space, which is great for backup.

All hosts listed above have trial accounts, you may wish to trial them all before deciding. Always, there is your own ISP for just hosting the photos at small quantity and alternative way in having your own web domain and hosting, which you create you own website and all.

Options for just hosting pics online are endless, just about which way you prefer.

Colin,

I've come to quite like Flickr. Originally I started off with a freebie account, and while there was nothing really bothersome about it for just linking photos, I soon decided it was worth the money for a Flickr Pro (paid) account.

The paid flickr accounts allow you to create more albums, more uploads and join more group pools... and it's the group pools that won me over. A large number of the group pools are quite vibrant communities, where you find a lot of fellow photographers who are interested in the same types of photography/interest that you have - from specialised Macro, to E-6/C-41Cross Processing, Lightpainting through to people getting excited over their Bokeh admiration.

There's also probably a group for where you live like Canberra, Novocastrians or Sydney. Such groups regularly have their own little mini-meets and outings, eg the Canberra one has one about every 6-8 weeks, the Melbourne and Sydney groups more frequently.

And one of the most prominent groups, Strobist!

You'll find by adding your images to a relevant group pool, you'll get critique and feedback from people everywhere.

Get a free account and see how you go. It'll be your thing or not :D

Like quite a few others I have found the best solution is to host your own webpages through a hosting company... this gives you the ultimate control over the look, feel and security of your gallery... And with software like Gallery2 it is easy to do...

Nothing to apologise about Colin. I for one have done the same previously as have others. That's what they pay us mods the big bucks for  (which I strangely have never yet received  )

If you do look at paying for a site - also look at SmugMug - there's a post in bargains (which you'll have access to once you've become a more regular contributor here) that includes codes that give you a US$5 discount off the first years membership
