Simon, I think it is a winner and doesn't eat much bandwidth
You really see the great diversity in the images and general high standard

Its great add-on to the website indeed.
But I tried clicking to open up a larger view of the image displayed, seems like it only takes me back to DSLRU main page.
Will be good if there is a 'pause/play' button to control the flow of images if one want to take a look at a particular one with more time IMHO

It was a quickie based upon something Geoff posted yesterday. The code was simple and concise, and easy to add in to the base source for the page.
FYI, it randomly selects a starting point from the database of PotW, and pops tem images in starting from that one, so every time you refresh the page, it should show you a different set of images.
I want to have the images linking to the relevant threads, or a gallery of all of the PotW, but (a) the database doesn't (yet) contain the references to the threads, so that would need to be a manual task, and (b) we don't (yet) have a gallery of the PotW selections, so I can't link to that either.
But ... glad you like it.

Yes a marvelous effort that...
Saw it last night night and loved the idea... but like obzelight, wasn't sure how long it had been there.
Thanks Gary and everyone for making it happen... theres some great shots!

Not a fan of the pop-up which covers the image with date and photographer...blocks the pic just as you get a look at it. Also, change the colour of the photographers name, very hard to read on the black pop-up.
Otherwise, excellent addition.

I toyed with the idea of whether or not to include this feature; it's trivial for me to turn it off, but I felt that it was a way of reminding people of the details of the image in question.
I'm happy to entertain discussion on this aspect, and will be guided by your views on this as to whether to continue it this way.
I could also perhaps consider the possibility of making this an option off your individual CPs, but that requires some element of work on my part.
For the moment, as I said, let's see who likes this, and who does not.

Like it! Nice retrospective... and a great refresh on the skills and talents of the people who contribute to this site.

I don't particularly like this either. But it is nice to recognise the photographers. Is there some way of including this info, but have it a) not covering the photo and b) not popping up and down? The popping up and down is kind of annoying.
Don't ask for much, do we?

I'm happy for it to stay the way it is but if the majority want the pop-up to pop off then I'm cool with that too.
Great job Gary - I saw that thread of Geoff's and was quite intrigued by it. This is a neat little application of the code.

I like it Gary.
Being new to the site it gives a great show of what has been seen so far. There are some awsome looking shots in there.
It would be nice if you could read the photograhers name more easily as previously posted.

Changing the text colours is unlikely to happen.
While the text, as it stands today, might be diffficult to read on image A, it could be fine on image B because of the specific colours within that second image, and thus there's no easy way to do this - the routines would need to try to see what colours each image contains, and then adjust to suit.
Not a trivial task in the first instance, and considering that I'd need to break into the original source package and make the changes ....

Nice implementation of SmoothGallery Gary!
I'm still looking for some kind of gallery software for my new site but don't have the patience to work it all out!
I like the idea. The pop-up is good also, but as others have suggested, not overlapping the photo would be better.

The alt text for the image links says "open image" but the link is to dlsrusers.com. Is that an image?

Regarding the info overlay:
Gary, I realise that you're bound by the abilities of the particular piece of software you're using, but I think an ideal solution would be to bring up the info display on mouse-over. Not sure how feasible this is, though.
Cheers
Steffen.

Ok, done! Good suggestion, Steffan.
What I've done is put that text into the mouseover. The mouseover, though, is hooked into the anchor point, and as I don't yet have the relationsip set between the images and their threads in the database, for now the anchor point simply resolves back here.
But, in doing this, I have now turned off the popup display, and extended the per image timing from 5 seconds to 7.
Please let me know if this is better, worse, you don't care ....

I disagree - this change is for the worse.
I preferred the version that displayed each maker's name without having to move the cursor off and onto the image each time.

Dave,
Sorry.
Let me see what's involved in doing this through your CP then. I like it better the other way too, but I think that those who do not do have a valid point in that it does detract (slightly) from the image.
I've now got the images linking to their PotW threads, but that's created another issue.
Many of the images, and particularly the older ones, were hosted at, for instance, Pixspot, and the hotlinking is now unavailable, which means that the images are no longer able to be seen.
If/when you come across such an instance, please send a pm to one of the
mods and include the link to the thread. The
mods will be able to see whether we can contact the photographer and in most instances we shall see if we can get a new link for the image in question.
THanx.
