started construction of a pano rail

Having read a few articles on here about pano photography i decided that i would need a pano slide to correct any distortion. so after an hour wondering around the mitre ten mega store here in beenleigh looking for ideas and materials $30 later and i have all the gear i need

for the sliding rail i used a small draw slide only about 100 mm in length which can support 10 kg
and some aluminium which i formed into an L bracket. and a 1/4inch bolt to bolt into the camera tripod mount screw hole

will assemble and test hopefully tomorrow

I would definately be interested to see how this "pans" out for you, if you'll excuse the terrible pun.

Few weeks ago, one of our members up North Coast region tried to make a bracket for flash or pano ? but we haven't heard from him since, wonder how's he going? Same as our Raydar planning to make for himself one, any update news there to show people? I'm interested to hear from you guys how are those projects going?

I'm in the process of making macro flash bracket.
Had to put it on hold due to work commitments.
Should be able to start on it again within week or two.
Will post pics when completed.

I gave in and got a Manfrotto focus rail. But you might want to try my trick with the L-bracket.




The best bargain i found was the L-bracket for shooting in portrait. I went to the local aluminium supplier (Capral) and asked for a sample offcut of the 50mmx50mm angle and they guy gave it to me for free. Tapped a 1/4 inch thread at one end and then used an old threded knob from an old flash bracket to hold the D70, then drilled a hole and tapped another 1/4inch thread to meet the center of the lens at the base. Cost a couple of dollars to make (I have to buy the thread tap) and is as stable as any pro equipment.

I have the Manfrotto rail for macro work but thanks to your ingenuity AlistairF I might give the pano stuff a go myself.

As I was typing I had a thought, I also have the Manfrotto macro bracket for flash that can be used in the vertical position on the rail. Looks like all I need is the pano head.

I started the project but with all this wet weather up here I haven’t had the spear money to get some of the stuff I need to keep going.
I’ll get there one day.

I’m quite interested in seeing how Chris has gone about putting his together.

Nice work on the L Plate. I just spent $150 on a 2nd hand one

Although mine does look better and will actually fit into my Markins M10.

well today i competed pano rail ver 1a and discovered a few problems.. mainly the further u slide back the more unstable the camer becomes. so i might ahve to look into wideing the slide to 2 rails will keep reports up to date as well as pictures when the final version is working
