Thought I'd ask members what they thought was the best thing they've bought to go with their D70. Thought it might help others set priorities for acquisition. It may help to know why you made your choice - eg made most difference to photography, best value purchase etc.
I'm going for the 1GB CF as it has enabled me to take continuous shots of difficult subjects, esp moving ones - today it was Roulettes and dogs jumping through a flyball course.

Hmm...that's a bit of a tough one...but I think the winner in my case is the 50mm 1.4 lens..this is a BEAUTIFUL lens clean/crisp and clear - GREAT portrait lens and with it's wide open appeture able to take amazing snaps in low light conditions.
A close second/third would be memory cards and my portable hdd/storage device.
The SB-800 is also an amazing piece of equipment...where do I stop?

Hard when you only have just one, the D70 is a body, it's the flexibility of the lens/flash system that truly make it great.

I would have to say that the best money I spent was the 50mm 1.8. For the money it offers terrific leeway in low-light, depth of field in well lighted cond. and sharp like a thumb tack.
I would also have to say that I love my polarizer filter as well. Gives oomph to the nature shots (which I do a lot of). One day maybe I'll say the SB 800, but I'm still learning that thing.

This is kind of a skewed survey Me thinks. I have to say ANY lens is the best add on. A camera with any other accessory but no lens is useless, right???? Get a lens and just shoot!!!!!!

The tripod and head because I use my long lens frequently, then the flash and then the right angle viewer.

1- 'Gitzo' G-1327 with 'Markins' M-20.
2- Other lenses, especially 70-200VR with TC-17EII.
3- 1 & 2 GB CF Cards.

i voted for my tripod as i think every photographer should votre for and use a tripod no matter what
but my other addition that has saved me a few times is my 300watt power inverter i hard wired into my car so i can charge up my batts on the road
and that has saved me from cutting a storm chase short many a times, i have two batteries and just keep swapping them over
and when i get my AC adapter ill be able to plug straight into my car mwahahah
u can get smaller one around 100-150Watt for around 80-150 that plug into your cigerette lighter

I agree with Geoff... My 50/1.4 allows me to capture images that the kit lens just can not... I love using it indoors in low light to get lovely effects...
After that it would be my tripod setup (Gitzo legs, Acratech head and Kirk L-plate)

I'd like to say the best add on is a wallet full of cash
, but since it's not in the list I'd say VR lens cos I haven't (yet) got good stable hand holding technique like the more seasoned photog's here no doubt have.

I think the best thing I have bought for my cam would have to be the SB – 800, closely followed by the 50mm 1.8
Cheers

I'm with Raydar on this one, the SB-800 is a great addition to the D70 with the 50mm F1.8 attached at social events.

I would have to say my 85mm 1.8
Probably cause it's my new toy. I am sure when I buy another lens or accessory that will get the title as the best thing in my bag.

I love my 50mm, but sometimes I wish that I had gotten the 28 fixed as I would do a lot less clamboring around in rooms when trying to get a shot. I figure it would be a lot easier to move in closer to the subject than to move backwards or away (space constraints) but I do think that it's hard to argue against a good lens addition, unless you're arguing for the SB 800...and find it really easy...then ignore the previous.
Neepie. it's fun to see a fellow Canadian here. I really hope you and Flip come back often. I think you can see that this is one of those really cool places.

After long and careful thought on this matter I have decided that the best addition to my D70 would be a car! Unfortunately, do to medical reasons that is not possible so anything in the macro line would suit me.

The only thing I've bought for my D70 so far is a fast memory card, but does that really count?! The next add-on will certainly be a faster lens.

Thanks Craig, I can't post my first D70 image here because the subject (my girlfriend) would kill me for doing so... Would be a pity that my 2sd post is also my last?!
Hum, anyway, my avatar (the origami) would have been among my first 100 shots.

SB800, tripod, then the rest. CF card is a given, the camera does not work without it. The strap is also a necessity, as the original hurts after extended use which discourages its proper use. SB800 was something that I purchased with the camera, I considered it integral. The tripod is important to me but has been put off over and again due to the high cost (almost as much as the d70 kit for something decent). Other lenses have managed to sneak their way in as opportunistic buys. VR lenses are at the bottom of the list for me.
Cheers
Matt

I'm casting my vote for the SB800. I've been doing a few portrait and product shots recently and the ability to use it remotely in wireless Commander
mode is an absolute godsend. Available light can be a major limitation with many locations: with this baby you can put it wherever you want. Now I want 2 more!

I couldnt' believe the difference between a standard CF card and the sandisk ultra 2. It is so much faster! That's really the only accessory I have bought so far. Using an existing Velbon tripod which works good.

Oh, I bought a standard sandisk 128mb card with my camera and was trialling out the 3fps and it barely did 1 frame per second. Put the 1gb sandisk ultra 2 in and it's click click click click click... very fast

The standard Sandisk 128Mb is less than 20x and it's old tech. for P&S, even with new generation of P&S it's slow.
The Sandisk Ultra II is fast same as other brand with 45x

Nope... and on another side note our camera shops down here aren't very good at all. The guy couldn't tell me much about the D70 at all, all he said was "Well... people who buy these sort of cameras usually know what they're looking for." and that's all.
You guys are much more helpful.
anyway, back to the topic at hand....

Best accessory is a vertical grip
Serioulsy though, a good lens is my first pick, then the flash.

Yes, when I were a lad, you could go to a camera shop, and get advice! You tell that to young people today, and they won't believe you!!
(No, I wasn't living in a cardboard box at the time)

I first added a bigger card, one SB800 then bought a new lens. Tripod came third...Then more cards and more lenses...new tripod head maybe next!
I did not mention the necessary upgrade in computer and printer. That chain of events would be familiar to most of us.

Gerard

G'day,
Wasn't too sure which to choose from the available list, so from the choices (assmuming the card is a given) I went for the VR which has increased my keep rate by an order of magnitude... Also lashed out on the SB800 and a 50/F1.8 but haven't played with them enough so I'm going for something I'm reasonably familiar with...
The SB800 went close though, didn't vote for it thought only cos I've still gotta get the hang of it..
Actually I would have voted for a CPL as the first "accessory", I like animal shots and landscape shots, and the diff the CPL makes to landscape stuff seems amazing...
Cheers,
Mudder
