Re: wide angle lens
Welcome fellow pommie (30+ years in Aus) The 2 favourites on this forum are the 12-24mm DX Nikon and the 12-24mm Sigma. I have the Sigma and I am very happy with it but I am sure you will get similar responses from DX owners. Chris Chris

I've just gone through the grief of this decision and chosen the Nikon 12-24mmDX. The quality a remembered long after the visa bill is paid.
The Nikon 12-24 has the advantage that it accepts filters and the Sigma equivalent doesn't. If you hunt around and do a search for 12-24 you'll find a few pics taken with this lens by forum members. Another idea is to check out http://www.pbase.com and search the camera database to select specific lenses to get a feel on the images that each produce. Alistair
Alistair,
The Nikkor enjoys one other important advantage over the Sigma. g.

And the Sigma has one important advantage over the DX - 35mm Chris Chris

Don't be in a rush to buy just yet. Tamron are about to realease a 11 - 18 mm wide angle. Specs look quite good and it will be significantly cheaper than the other two. It will be interesting to see the reviews.
Oneputt, I posted this information on our forum since October last year and my supplier promised to loan me a unit 15 days for eval. but at this stage I did not see anything yet, interesting though, but no lens atm Birddog114

That's only an advantage if you shoot film. I haven't loaded a roll of 35mm for well over two years. But now that you've made that point, that's perhaps another reason for some to consider the 24-120 VR over the kit lens. g.

G'day,
The wide angle lenses look *very* nice, but the price tag puts me off them as I don't know how often I'd use it in comparison to my other lenses... I'd be interested to see how the Tamron "pans" out... ar ar ar... Sorry, someone had to day it... Cheers, Mudder Aka Andrew
Hi,
The Tamron SP AF11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 is nearly impossible to find. From what I read, it can take about 6 months to get one!
And I've just the latest news, Now is December 05, hope this is not true! They have had problem in the design! Birddog114
