Which Teleconverter - TC-17E II or TC-20E II?

Just about to buy a 70-200 VR courtesy of birddog & Mr Poon. I want to match it with a teleconverter. I was going to get the TC-17E II but am now looking at maybe the TC-20E II instead.

On the specs you lose 1.5 stops with the 1.7 and 2 with the 2.0. This is the tradeoff I see for the extra reach.

There's bugger all difference in the prices and you always want a little more reach so before I decide to go that way I'd like to hear from the experts their opinions on the TC-17E II vs TC-20E II and whether I'd be better to stick with the TC-17E II

TIA

Stubbsy,
I think I'm the only one has both the TC-20 and TC-17 on this forum.
I'm not recommend the TC-20 cos:
- It's soft at the 400 end of the 70-200 in full reach.
- Auto Focus is not fast after the 300 in low light but useable.
- Double size of the TC-17.

The TC-17 is an excellent TC to go with the 70-200VR as you tried last Saturday at the picnic.

Next week when you come for picking up the 70-200VR, you can try both of them and will see what I meant.

stubbsy,

I agree with Birddog here... I tried the TC-20 and TC-17 on my 70-200 before I decided which one to buy, and although the results were still good for the TC-20, they were not nearly as good as the TC-17.

Thought you'd weigh in on this birddog. Thanks for the info and I'll do what you say. See you on the 5th of Feb.
