Equipment Insurance

I currently have some of my camera/lens as specified items on my home contents insurance policy.
Would be interested to hear from others as to what they do for insurance purposes.
I am an enthusiast only but would need to include cover during overseas and domestic trips.
Any relevant information would be appreciated.

I'm currently looking at http://www.itinsurance.com.au because they're recommended by http://www.qualitycamera.com.au and I really, really like the latter shop. No offence to Mr Poon but for a camera body I'd rather have an Australian warranty, and Stu has also bailed me out when I got the run around from Digit@l City over a lens I needed quickly.

They offer 28 days of cover for overseas trips and reasonable prices. My problem is that I'm in a share house, so insurance can be tricky but those guys seem to be happy with the big metal toolbox bolted to the floor that I store the camera in. My only insurance is on the camera and my PC, I've not found it worth while to pay the extra $1000-ish every year for the misc junk that I own, or my bicycle collection (yes, I'd be sad if I had one or more bikes stolen, but they cost ~10%/pa to insure).

I have my gear (about 6k worth) as specified items on my home insurance. Costs me about $150 pa and it is covered for anywhere, damage theft etc and overseas for 1 month.

It works for me.

I have mine with Aon. It used to be a deal with Nkon Club Australia and I just kept it up. It is supposed to be specific for photographers.

I actually just got a quote from Aon today, $407 for $9500 (I've spent how much  ) coverage anywhere in Aus and NZ which also includes accidental damage. I plan on calling a few places through the week for comparison.

I've got about $15k worth of equipment insured through AON - they had to pay out once and did so very, very quickly. Simply faxed them a repair quote and receipt from Canon, proof of purchase (an eBay auction) and a Cheque was in the mail that week.

Ironically; the flash ended up being repaired for free, so cancelling a claim with them is just as easy ;)

Thanks folks for your information. I'll have a look at Aon and compare with my current insurance.

Does that include coverage both in and outside the home as well as accidental damage?

Offtopic but how do they get away with offering insurance to over 55s only? Isn't that age discrimination?

The same way female-only gyms and male-only social clubs "get away with it".

It's called catering to a market.

We have "under 25s" bus tours, age restrictions on schools, etc. When was the last time you saw a 40yo attending kindergarten?

Actually it is illegal to withhold goods and services, in NSW at least, based upon age which is why I suddenly thought to ask (out of curisoity mind you, I don't care). So I went looking and it appears there are exemptions (other than the obvious ones like sale of alcohol to minors) and insurance providers are one of those that are exempt. So there you go.

DISCLAIMER: This post does not constitute advice and is not a recommendation of any kind - always research your insurance options fully and read the insurer's product disclosure statement. This is purely an account of my personal experience on the subject ;-)

I just got off the phone with AAMI. For an extra $14 per month (on top of my existing home and contents policy) my camera gear is covered for the replacement value of the 3 specific big ticket items (body & two L series lenses) plus an additional $2,000 (maximum, per claim) for other non-specified items.

This is for cover both inside the home (above my existing contents cover) as well as cover when away from the home.

Not covered:
  • loss or damage from wear and tear, gradual deterioration, depreciation, moths, vermin or insects, the action of light or atmosphere or climatic conditions or from any process of cleaning or restoration,
  • mechanical, structural, electrical, electronic or other failure or breakdown (that'd be covered by warranty),
  • loss or damage to sporting equipment from its use in the sporting activity,
  • damage to watches and clocks by overwinding,
  • loss or damage when the personal valuables belong to or are in the custody of anyone who is engaged in professional entertainment (eg: musician with guitar/amp/effects gear etc),
  • loss or damage when the personal valuables have been confiscated by customs or any other authority ( ).

Excess is $100.

I'll have to re-assess things later in the year as I'll be overseas for longer than the 30 day limit that is imposed on this cover.

Cheers
