Triggering sb25 from 400d/430ex

Postby outtram on Mon Feb 26, 2007 5:48 pm

How do I trigger a Nikon sb25 from my 400d with a 430ex on the hot shoe?

Could I have a receiver of some sort on the sb25 that reacts to the light from the 430ex to triger the sb25 or would this not work that well?

400d doesn’t have a pc sync output at all. And I think the 430ex doesn’t send out any signals to trigger other things like its big brother the 580ex not sure if it would trigger the sb25 anyway?

I do have a 4ch radio transmitter device with 2 receivers which I’m pretty sure should work but I wont be able to get any ttl action from flash and will need to have two tripod stands.

Thanks for any help.

You don't. Actually, it may be possible to get an E-TTL-aware slave trigger for the 430EX, but you won't have TTL metering of the SB25.

The 430EX puts out a pre-flash to let the camera sort out the flash metering, then the actual flash for the exposure. Most slave triggers will think the pre-flash is the one they need to trigger against, and the slave flash will have nothing left when the exposure comes around.

Well, you can get a PC-sync adapter for the hotshoe...

You're right, the 430EX won't be an E-TTL master, and an SB25 can't participate in E-TTL control anyway.

Them's the breaks...
Mind you, there's a lot to be said for manual flash metering (especially if your flash positions are fixed).
